Boarder Labs and CalStreets — Local services in Vancouver

A few years ago, my husband visited this shop for the first—and only—time. Barely five minutes into asking a simple question about wheels and bushings, the long-haired owner abruptly told him he was “taking too long” and demanded he leave that there are other customers. As my husband was calmly walking out, the owner began shoving him toward the door. Once they were both outside and my husband was unlocking his bike to leave, the owner punched him in the face.

Still holding his board, my husband didn’t want to escalate the situation. He also didn’t want to deal with police or court proceedings. As creatives, we didn’t have the funds to pursue legal action and didn’t want this person to drain more of our time.

The injustice and violence of that day have stayed with us for years. My husband was traumatized by the owner—a violent man presenting himself as an “old-school hippy skater.” It’s shocking that someone like this can run a business. Great store in terms of stock, but my experience was negative here. I was buying my 1st surf skate and decided to support a local store instead of buying online (40$ cheaper). I went there to get some knowledge, I was hoping they would help me pick the right one for my needs. It's a 400$ skateboard and as a novice you don't want to go wrong here. They guy seemed experienced in surf skating, but he just wouldn't provide anything I wouldn't find online before, I kept asking questions and he's answers were short and kinda useless, completely disinterested. He didn't make the effort to step over the counter, perhaps show me the proper stance, measure my surf stance, ask me some questions to see what am I looking for etc. I mean, isn't the reason we go to stores to get a 1st hand experience and get some knowledge and tips in person and get help to choose the right product? 0 effort, 0 passion from this store, I ended up buying...

Let me start by saying this was a nearly 5000$ purchase, of a Lacroix Nazare Esk8. They had their US price listed as Canadian $. A week later, I was informed that BL had cancelled my order. I needed to pay another nearly 1000$ for their mistake with pricing. so I did, with the agreement with the owner that my board would be shipped 2 day delivery, and Boarder labs would pay for 2 day.. . ok. Was told board would take a bit better than 3 weeks to be built and delivered. Took nearly 8 weeks. Was told the remote upgrade would cost 100$ extra... ended up costing 177$ extra. The 2 day shipping that was never sent properly took 17 days, was not shipped 2 day according to Canada Post. Never again will I spend a single dime with BoarderLabs.
