Checkerboard Hill — Local services in Hong Kong

Checkerboard is very easy to find. Anyone can reach it. Come out of Lok Fu MTR exit A. You will see Circle K across the street. Turn left. Walk up Wang Tau Hom East Rd. Stay on the left hand side footpath. At the end you will see a set of stairs signage will point to Lok Fu Public Library. Walk up there. Once at the top, there is a pedestrian crossing about 20m on the right. Cross Junction Rd and walk up Fu On St. It will get pretty steep in the middle section but any one can do it. It’s a paved road. At the end of Fu On St you will reach Luk Fu Service Reservoir Rest Garden. Don’t walk into the park. Look to the left there is a small trail that will become a dirt track then will lead you to a stairwell. Go down the stairs, turn right and remain on this path. About 100m on this path look to your right 90 degrees and up and you will see the Checkerboard. Go further up this footpath and you will see a similar set of stairs like before. lol people complaining that there are "no formal roads" to this place and no clear directions on Google Maps. Did it ever occur to you that this place is considered abandoned? Yes, it is a landmark, but it's an abandoned landmark, which would explain why there are no official directions or signs of how to access it. The point is to keep most people out/deter them. If you are still determined to go here, you do so at your own risk.

It is worth the trek for the views (no plane landings/take-offs to be seen anymore), but the fact it's abandoned needs to be clarified. Seems like no one has made this connection before now, based on other reviews of this place. It's no longer a formal tourist attraction and hasn't been for years. It's more of an urban exploration site now. Also explains why it's so unkept and parts of the walk up there can be dangerous for some of not careful. I love the fact that this is an accessible hike / walk from Lok Fu mtr exit A. As you come out of exit A you can see a circle.K, turn left and walk until the end of the road and you can see steps. Climb up the steps and you will need to cross the road and you will see Lok Fu Park. On the left, there is a road, walk up the hill and you will be in checkerboard Hill in no time.

The view from here is amazing. On the one side you can see old Kai Tak now with lots of construction, ICC, IFC and even the peak on a clear day. I think you can also see Wong Tai Sin in a distance.

On the otherwise you can see the iconic Lion Rock.

If you come up early, you can find a place got picnic and there is old water works building.

If you want to watch the sunset and wait for the early evening lights to light up, bring a torch with you.
