This is my first time visiting an onsen that wasn't attached to my hotel. When I tell you that this was my best experience yet, I mean it! Originally my fiancé and I had stopped by just to get information on the pricing, but due to us having mild Japanese language skills, we ended up buying the service and going in immediately. By the way, tattoos are allowed~!
Staff: The staff was very friendly and helpful. Their English is good enough to explain everything, as well as the signage being in English as well.
Cost: I believe it was 1,300 yen per person (or maybe that was for both of us?) for access to the baths, sauna and rental towels, which is extremely cheap in my opinion!
Services: here are three baths that vary in size and temperature. The biggest bath is the hottest, but not as hot as some I've been in previously. (This is a good thing because I was able to stay in much longer than usual without getting overheated.) The medium bath is carbonated and has a cooler temperature, but is still pretty warm. If you're not good with high heat, I recommend trying this bath first! The smallest bath is cold, which is great for when you're overheated. I saw some Japanese people use their bowls to take water out for a quick rinse, but I personally enjoyed using it as a cold plunge. There is also a sauna which costs more then the baths-only, but I highly recommend it. I enjoyed sweating in the dry heat after spending some time in the baths. The sauna room smells like a campfire (loved this) and has some sounds that were nice to listen to while I meditated.
Overall: Definitely a hidden gem in the Kamata area, and one of the best onsen experiences I've had during any of my trips to Japan. If you're in the area and wondering if you should visit: DO IT! Your body...
Read moreThe Kondou family who have owned and operated Hasunuma Onsen for over sixty years offered my partner and I the greatest experience we had in our whole three month trip. The friendly nature of the staff along with the cleanliness and professionalism of the onsen is a gift to the neighborhood. We went there multiple times a week for three months and miss it dearly now that we have left Japan. Tourists are made to feel so welcome and communication is made so easy by Yoshimasa san being an excellent English speaker. Tattoos are welcomed and friendly conversation is appreciated. I cannot recommend this lovely family ran onsen more. To any travelers in Ota city or beyond come here and see and feel the very best of Japanese hospitality. Thank you kindly Yoshimasa, Yuki and the dear Kondou Okaasan and Otaasan, for giving us memories to last us until we...
Read moreThis is a nice tattoo-friendly public bath. The mural showing a waterfall is beautiful. The lady at the reception was very friendly. They even gave me a small sento towel in exchange of filling a survey they had. Pheraps the only issue is that the space is rather small and the water is rather hot. This is a common problem I encounter in most sentos, so I still recommend people to give it a try. I have visited lots of sentos in the Tokyo-Yokohama area. Many have about three baths with very hot water that is hard to bear. For those that want a spacious bath with a variety of pools and temperatures and easy too use, I think that Tanmachi Yokujo, near Yokohama Station is the best tattoo-friendly sento I have found. Unlike this Hasunuma bath, it lacks the decorative murals, so for those wanting a more atmospheric experience I think Hasunuma is a...
