This place is a machine and vital to understanding fish in Japan.

it sells $13 million worth of fish each day 1/4 of all fish sold in Japan goes through this market the most expensive single tuna sold here was $750,000 1,000 tuna per day are sold it employs 42,000 people

Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo. We did this on the first day, to take advantage of the jet lag and waking up around 3:30/4. It’s a little further than you might expect and public transport is also limited at that time of the morning, so plan ahead!

The tuna auction starts at 5:30 and is over by 6:15ish. We viewed it from the gallery high above, so although you don’t hear what is going on, you get a good idea of movement, tempo etc.

Connected to the facility you have the wholesale market. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the tuna auction and offers limited viewing, but again you get an idea of the tempo of wholesale tuna market. There is also a selection of shops, selling related knives and accessories. Also in this building there is access to a roof terrace. If the weather is clear, go up and check out views of Mt Fuji as well as the city. It was stunning and also empty.

Between the building that hosts the tuna auction and the building where the wholesalers are, there are lots of restaurants. They open early, right after the auction, so if you are in the mood for beer and sushi at 6:30, this is a good stop for you! Some restaurants are closed solely to fish market workers, and some seem to have a big following, with large queues. Whatever your budget, you can find a place for breakfast here. If you want to read more about the market and the supply chain, the Economist have done a very good...

Toyosu Market, located in Tokyo’s Koto Ward, is the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and a major hub for Japan’s famous seafood trade. Opened in 2018, it replaced the historic Tsukiji Market, carrying on the legacy with modern facilities and enhanced environmental standards. Toyosu Market is known for its early-morning tuna auctions, where buyers bid on prized bluefin tuna—a spectacle that draws both professionals and tourists alike. The auctions, previously open to visitors at Tsukiji, are now viewable from designated observation decks, allowing a behind-the-scenes look at this lively tradition.

Spanning three main buildings, the market is organized into sections for seafood, fruits, and vegetables, as well as restaurants and retail shops. The seafood wholesale area is an impressive, state-of-the-art facility with temperature-controlled rooms and sanitation systems that ensure optimal freshness and quality. Visitors can also enjoy Toyosu’s acclaimed restaurants, which serve sushi and seafood directly from the market, offering a truly fresh and authentic experience.

Toyosu Market has incorporated many modern amenities, including rooftop gardens, viewing areas, and dedicated information points for tourists. Its dedication to food safety and sustainability aligns with global standards while preserving the vibrant culture of Tokyo’s iconic fish market. With its blend of tradition and innovation, Toyosu continues to be a fascinating destination for food lovers and a critical center for Tokyo’s...
