Whale Dream - Whales watching and swim with dolphins excursions in Mauritius — Local services in Grande Rivière Noire

I joined a shared trip for swimming with dolphins and whale watching. Whale watching was really a highlight of my entire trip to Mauritius... and that did not happen. There were two boats for our groups, and the other one was equipped with hydrophone. It started nicely, our boat went to dolphins swimming area near the coast, I really enjoyed swimming in the ocean alongside the dolphins. Then we started moving into the open ocean, the waters were a bit rough, but not much, and weather in general was good. We met the other boat some 20-30 minutes later, and then suddenly were told that our boat sails back to shore, no whales today for us. The other boat and few other similar size boats in the vicinity kept going deeper into the ocean. We returned to the pier, and that was it. Later, the owner sent a text saying sorry for us not being able to watch the whales, but the other boat did find them! There were people on our boat who did not swim with the dolphins, so for them it was just a 3 hour bumpy ride into the ocean and back. I could understand if the weather was bad, or we tried to find the whales and failed. But none of this, our boat just turned around and sailed back while the other one did finally find whales out in the ocean. No any form of compensation was offered. Felt like a scam. I booked a swim-with-dolphins excursion somewhat last-minute (the day before) and was thrilled that they had availability at 6am. Unfortunately my companion couldn't attend so it ended up being a private tour for just me, but Jason and Tom were super welcoming, made sure that I was comfortable, and took me on a grand tour of not only seeing and swimming with dolphins but also snorkeling at beautiful spots near Le Morne full of tropical fish and with sea turtles. The snorkeling was a nice unexpected treat, and far better than the other snorkeling site I visited on the East side of Mauritius as part of a Ile aux Cerfs boat tour.

We spotted spinner dolphins SW of Le Morne but turned back because the sea was rough and choppy. Later, we saw both spinner and bottlenose dolphins near Tamarin with a dozen+ other boats present. Even though it was crowded and the dolphins were on the move, Jason and Tom expertly maneuvered us to good swim spots. I appreciated that they lengthened the excursion a little bit to allow me to jump in 5-6 times and get some fantastic shots of me swimming alongside the dolphins.
