This was AN AMAZING TOUR! I recommend this to anyone visiting if you want a real picture of Mexico and an authentic food experience. Our tour guide Hector was amazing, knowledgeable so friendly. We ended up being the only folks who joined the tour (me and my partner) so it also ended up being a very nice, intimate experience.
The tour: Was very raw, and really showcased the realness of Mexico city, beyond the curated, gentrified areas. I wouldn't have been able to explore this area given its chaos, and vastness, if not for this tour. Made me VERY full with such unique and delectable food. I tried both delicious, authentic and eccentric food! I also tried the best suadero tacos I'll never forget While in a rather different area never made me feel unsafe
Hector, our guide: Was so accommodating and cared for us throughout. He'd point out any cracks on the floor so we wouldn't trip, recommended when we could and could not take pics (to be sensitive to the area and locals), made sure we crossed the streets safely, and never left us behind. Knew A LOT about the area (as a local), the food (as a chef who buys his ingredients in La Merced) and the people (as a friend of the vendors). He knew about the good and bad, past and present, ins and outs. He shared the plight of the vendors, the history of the different markets beyond the places we visited, the stories of the people we met, and the real real about all the food we ate!
Going to recommend this tour to anyone...
Read moreI took the tour in Puebla. Take their recommendation about not eating before the tour. I felt STUFFED! lol I loved that every food place we visited was full of locals. I was able to try things I've never had before even though I've lived in Mexico previously. Learned a lot about the poblano culture, history, and origins of some of its unique foods. The guide Aleyn was lively, and I enjoyed that it didn't feel rushed. In fact, by the time the tour ended, I noticed it had exceeded 3 hrs. She was very patient to let me stop and take photos of interesting sights, and she offered to hold smaller foods items so I could take photos. She even had brought a knife with her so she could separate sandwich-like items to get a better view of its contents for my photos. I appreciated that extra level of thoughtfulness. I learned a lot and ate some truly fantastic food. Highly...
Read moreThe Eat Mexico tour of La Merced market with my guide Tonalli was a mind-blowing, culinary knowledge expanding, delicious adventure. Tonalli is a master tour guide and a pleasure to hang with and absorb knowledge from. I ate the best Mexican food I can remember. As the largest traditional food market in Latin America, La Merced is a thing to behold. I went on a Monday afternoon with lighter crowds as a solo traveler; I would recommend visiting off peak both for the ease of movement and accessibility to all the vendors. Anyone with an interest in Mexican history who enjoys eating should take advantage of any Eat Mexico activity, but particularly the tour of La Merced. I cannot commend Tonalli enough for her friendly attitude, ability to convey knowledge, love of sharing, and general tips. Made me feel like Anthony Bourdain. 5 stars,...
