Kuirau Lake — Local services in North Island

Free geothermal experience in the heart of Rotorua! This area is a big geothermal hotspot and aside from the big thermal lake there are boiling mud pools, boiling streams and the Maori legend of how the lake (and the park) got it's name. There is a walkway that goes all round the lake with various viewing points, some that go out over the lake itself. There's even a carving of Manaia on one side. There was so much steam coming off the lake you could not see the water at times. The lake seems to be encroaching on the park and causing a bit of damage to some paths and fences. Some of the hot pools, including the lake, are better than those at expensive thermal areas nearby.
