New World Supermarket Blenheim — Local services in South Island

Lately (last few months) New World Blenheim has had very empty shelves on many occasions. I have assumed this is due to Covid and/or their renovations but other supermarkets in the area have had more on their shelves when I went to find the items I couldn’t get at New World. However yesterday 2nd Jan I went to New World at 4.30 pm to find no bags of lettuce, one sad looking cucumber, very few cherry tomatoes, one very old looking broccoli head and the vegetable aisle looked stripped out of many things. A man then appeared with some more broccoli and I commented on the lack of vegetables and he said that he was on by himself and it was impossible to keep up. I suspect New World are understaffed and that’s the problem not Covid/renovations at all. I am a bit tired of all the renovation disruption and empty shelves and vegetable aisles. We just visited this super market to grab dinner. We were buying rice, curries,eggs and one beer. At the till the lady asked the manager to come over and the manager was incredibly rude. She demanded ID which both my husband and I went to pass her two pieces ( drivers license and credit card). She informed my husband she did not need to see his (apparently him being tall means he is of age?). Before even glancing at what I was handing her, she said "no I will need your passport." I appreciate and am Complimented by the fact that I look under 25 but there was no need to be so rude or use the tone she did. Furthermore my understanding is drivers licenses are legal ID (obviously we prefer to keep our passports in a safe). Needless to say not only will we not be back to a new world store, we will...

Sadly this supermarket has drastically gone downhill over the past couple of years. The produce department is far from fresh, they regularly have rotten fruit and veges on display at rather expensive prices. Sadly the shelves are often empty, as if there hasnt been enough stock ordered, or not enough staff to put the stock out. The amount of times I've popped in to grab a loaf of bread only to find none on the shelf is ridiculous. If rumours are to be believed the current owners do nothing to discourage bullying in the workplace. The previous owners were frequently on the shop floor helping out, I've never seen the new owners in all the times I've been into the store since they took over.
