Senegal's public market. Fruits so fresh. Sad because this is their socioeconomic profile in 2025

GDP Growth: Surging due to oil/gas exports; reached 8.9% quarterly growth Q3 2024 and projected at 8.8% for 2025 . Sectors: Services 58.8% of GDP, industry 24.3%, agriculture 16.9% . Key Drivers: Oil 15% of exports and gas from Sangomar and Greater Tortue Ahmeyim projects; new infrastructure , $1.2bn Ndayane Port boosting FDI, which rose to $2.64bn in 2023 . Challenges: High public debt 48.3% of GDP, fiscal deficits, and reliance on imports for essentials . Current life span : 69.16 years or 69.2 male, 71.3 female in 2025, up from 36.5 years in 1950 . Trends: Steady increase due to healthcare access and lower child mortality; projected to reach 80.9 years by 2100 . Health Challenges: High maternal mortality, infectious diseases malaria, TB, and limited health spending 4.35% of GDP .

Cost of Living Monthly Costs: Family of four: ~1.7M CFA $2,800 . Single person: ~483K CFA $800 . Key Expenses: Rent Dakar: 1bedroom apartment: 211K–490K CFA $350–$810 . Drivers: Colonial legacy, agricultural vulnerability, and urbanrural divide .

Unemployment Official Rate: 2.99% 2024 modeled estimate, but this masks underemployment . Reality: Youth unemployment exceeds 40% in cities; 77.5% work in lowproductivity agriculture . Migration: High youth joblessness drives risky migration to Europe . Sources of Income/Livelihood Agriculture: Employs 77.5% peanuts, millet, sorghum, but contributes only 16.9% to GDP . Exports: Oil 15%, phosphates 13%, fish 10%, and gold 13% . Other Sectors: Tourism: 500k visitors/year, generating $120M . Services: Finance, logistics Dakar is a regional banking hub . Informal Economy: Dominates daily livelihoods, especially in cities . Challenges and Opportunities Progress: Oil/gas boom and FDI are accelerating growth, with potential to fund poverty reduction . Barriers: Cost of living pressures inflame inequality; rent/food consume 60% of income for urban poor . Healthcare gaps persist despite rising life expectancy; maternal mortality remains high . Pathways: Diversify exports beyond oil to renewables and tech , New Deal Technologique initiative . Boost agriculture resilience to climate shocks and reduce rural poverty . Senegal's oil wealth offers a lifeline, but inclusive growth requires investing in human capital—not...

It is the most tourist market of Dakar. Located in the heart of the old Dakar, between Avenue Sarrault and the port, it houses beautiful colonial houses. In a beautiful building of 1910, devastated by a fire in 1994, then rebuilt in 1997, one finds all the European type of food, beautifully presented. It is in the neighborhood that the sellers of flowers move loaded bouquets, next to craft shops (basketry, wood carving, leather goods) and modern shops: butchers, grocery stores ... There are also good and good sales clerk. already cooked food with several recipes; you just have to go to really discover the talents and good appetite. It's really a...

Best mix of fresh produce and local culture in Dakar! Kermel Market, located close to the sea, is a wonderful place for everyday shopping as well as exploring local culture. Prices are almost the same as supermarkets, but the variety is much better—you’ll find fresh vegetables, fruits, chicken, and seafood all in one place.

As a foreigner who doesn’t speak French or the local language, I still felt very welcomed by the vendors.

The place is bit dirty and very smelly. One less star for this. Beyond food items, the market also offers traditional artifacts and souvenirs, making it a nice spot to pick up something unique to take...

It's a fun market with tons of meat and produce. On the outside are a lot of different shops. I found it entertaining to walk around the outside to see the shops and then wander around inside to see the different produce. To the side is also freshly prepared dishes that you can enjoy for lunch. I saw that Mark Wiens enjoyed a meal here once! Unfortunately, we didn't try anything because some of us were too hesitant.
