Fennell's Gas & Appliances — Local services in Eastern Cape

I only used Fennell's since our usual gas guy is frustratingly slow. I now wish I waited.

I will never use them again and advise others to exercise caution when doing so too:

I subcontracted Fennell's to install gas supply to our lounge fireplace and kitchen as well as to our gas fire pit outside.

Bad service from Fennel's included:

1. Complaint from our builder that the Fennell's employee pitched up and expected them to trench the gas pipes.

2. Initial site visit for quote layout of pipes were discussed. When work carried out it was changed.

3. No adequate accessible stop valve at gas hob, layout of visible pipes were unsightly especially considering it was a new build.

4. Gas pipes installed on wall but not trunked (inside garage and exterior). When queried it was stated it was not a requirement. It looked unsightly and we requested trunking at an additional cost to us.

5. On one site visit, at least 3 people could smell gas in our garage. Fennell's employee could not and checked the pipes and confirmed nothing was wrong. It was suggested to us that this smell was due to lighting and relighting the lounge fire place whilst testing.

The next day we heard hissing in the garage and turned off the gas and notified Fennell's.

Same engineer and this time a younger member of staff attended. It was the younger staff member who immediately identified the issue. It was a faulty valve that was identified and replaced. (there was surprise as this was highly unusual).

6. Having these issues we decided to use another gas engineer to attend to our gas fire pit. Fennell's had put the gas pipes feeding this area but failed to put the pipes via trunking as required to get sign off! Our new engineers had to relay pipes this time with trunking as required.

7. Just prior to our new gas engineers completing the fire pit we noticed that there was a leak at one of the main gas bottles. Most likely because they weren't asleep during GAS 101 class, they immediately noticed that the valve was not screwed in enough and that white tap...

I had a terrible experience with Fennel Gas and will definitely never use their services again. Firstly, I had to wait for more than 30 minutes just to get my gas refilled — completely unacceptable, especially when there were only a few people ahead of me.

What’s worse is the refill itself. I only use the gas heater briefly in the morning (when my child gets ready for school) and in the evening (during bath time), yet the 9kg gas cylinder didn’t even last two weeks. That has never happened before. I’ve been refilling at Spar for years and have always had cylinders that last well over a month under the same usage.

To make things more suspicious, I noticed that the nozzle on my cylinder was removed and reinserted during the refill process — something that’s never been done at Spar. I genuinely feel like I may have been given less gas or maybe even filled with air. I completely regret trusting them with my money and my family’s safety.

Save yourself the hassle and avoid Fennel Gas. Poor service, long waiting times, and highly questionable...

The worst service ever. I purchased a hob from them a couple of years before and took it to them for a service. A part needed to be replaced and they did not have it in stock.  They ordered the part and told us that they will contact me when it arrives.  They never contacted me and two months later I did a follow up only to find out they used the part in somebody else's hob. I was told by the technician that they will order the part again. I took it to the manger and he arranged for the hob to be fixed the following day. When I picked up the hob I noticed the screws they drilled out,  without asking permission,  was not replaced and I was told by the technician to return it again the following day to be fixed with rivets. I was not happy,  thus they riveted it while I waited but only two of the four screws they drilled out.  I left before I had further frustration.
