When I visit South Korea, I always make it a point to explore traditional markets. Perhaps it's the nostalgia of the bustling rural markets during my childhood or the distinct aroma of a vibrant market, but there's something special about these places that I always look forward to. However, my recent visit to Yeongdeungpo Market left me with a sense of disappointment.
The market, known for its declining business, felt truly disheartening. It's a stark contrast to the popular and lively traditional markets you often find in South Korea, where both locals and foreigners gather to enjoy the variety of food and other attractions. In contrast, Yeongdeungpo Market was so quiet that it seemed like there were more staff members than customers. The overall atmosphere felt rather sluggish, which was unexpected.
Perhaps the less-than-ideal image of a traditional market in other places, with its charm and untidiness, was perceived quite differently here. The dark and somewhat dreary atmosphere made it appear untidy to the point of surprise. This visit was a reminder of how traditional markets can differ greatly in their vibrancy and appeal.
