Medway Park should consider billing customers according to the services they actually use. My membership is £39 a month, and I only use the gym. While £39 might be reasonable value for those who use other facilities such as the other gyms, pool or classes, it feels overpriced for gym-only users. Many gym-only memberships elsewhere are available for around £25 per month, making Medway Park’s offering poor value in comparison.
Cleanliness: The gym is kept reasonably clean, and I have to commend the cleaning staff — they’re friendly and do a great job maintaining the space day-to-day. However, the facility clearly needs a deeper clean at least once a week, which doesn’t seem to happen.
Health & Safety Concerns: This is where the biggest issue lies. There are frequently under-18s using the main gym, often lifting weights far too heavy for them, with little to no staff supervision. I’ve even seen a child vaping in the gym and staff didn’t intervene. I regularly report safety concerns like this (about once a month), but nothing seems to change. If the gym allows children to use the facilities, there should always be staff monitoring the floor to ensure safety and proper use of equipment.
Additionally, some of the instructors give questionable advice during inductions, suggesting there’s a real need for further staff training.
Opening Hours and Closures: For £39 a month, the opening times are quite restrictive.. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and bank holidays is unreasonable for a modern gym.. You need to open at 6am on a weekend.. On top of that, the gym frequently closes for extended periods, such as over Christmas, or for random days, without any fee adjustments. Members like me end up paying full price while being unable to use the facilities. Staff often suggest using another Medway Park location, but the alternatives are not located locally.. So I end up having to pay for a different gym which annoys me more.
I will say the gym itself is well equipped, it does need a shift around to be more practical because the layout is limiting, kettle bells would be a nice addition, having free mats upstairs near the weights would be useful. However, It’s a poorly managed gym that could easily be great with...
Read moreThe pro of this gym is only if you live local.
The gym is extremely over priced when you position it within the market, with 3 other local gyms all priced at £20pcm, so you should expect a lot more for your money for a gym at £40pcm.
The gym is very dated, they have just replaced natural lighting with some random blue lights I assume as an attempt to try make it look more modern, but it’s actually more annoying to be sat in the dark to work out. There is no space to use the weights freely, so you are restricted a lot of the time.
The changing rooms are horrendous, and require a coin to use the lockers- in 2024?!
The opening times at the weekend is 8-4 (both Saturday and Sunday!?) which is ridiculously short considering the price of the membership. The closest gym is 7-7 which is what I feel like you should expect for a weekend.
The classes are so limited if you work office hours. I have never used the pool so can’t comment on that.
The staff are not equipped to offer support on using the equipment, I had to intervene when a staff member was showing a new customer a dangerous way to use the equipment.
The under 18s are always in the main gym, and no one stops them. Staff just walk past them and say nothing.
I have used this gym for years as I live local, but after a 20% price increase I really don’t see any value in money in this gym. The gym is always quiet, so I can only assume that’s the reasoning for the big...
Read moreLarge swimming pool, boom pool and baby pool, all can get very busy at times. Very tired looking with lots of broken tiles. Large court areas which are easy to book during the day. Gym is fairly small but has a good range of equipment. Not manned enough and doesn't seem to have anyone around to ask about how to use the machines if unsure. The machines were very dusty and didn't look like they'd been cleaned for a while. Changing rooms are not cleaned to a good standard (photos are in just one cubical) The changing rooms are communal with separate toilet and showers areas, although have had men walking through the female area so unable to take a proper shower after swimming, would benefit from separate shower cubicles for privacy. Good array of different memberships. Parking is ample although does get filled in peak times. Parking is free for centre users, however the machines to register your number plate is quite often not working and is placed where you could easily forget to register if going straight into the gym or courts, could do with them placed on opposite wall as well. Staff are polite and cheerful but not very well informed. Overall, apart from the new build, the whole place could do with a make over and a good clean but is fairly good value for...
