In all honesty, I visited Hay-on-wye, largely to visit this place and I must say I wasn't disappointed at all! In fact it outlived my expectations! There are so many books that the first feeling is that of being overwhelmed. But once you get over that, you realise you need not a few hours but two days at least to go through each aisle and everything they offer! It's not what you'd call a second hand bookshop in terms of prices, don't be mistaken, they do sell new books as well as old first editions and leather bound book editions etc and hence it's not cheap. It is on the pricier end of a bookshop. There's a hidden gem of books in the basement which most people forget to visit. There's also a cafe serving absolutely fantastic pancakes at the far end of the cafe! The fries/chips and the pancakes saved my day as vegetarian person! My partner loved them so much that he ordered a second plate for himself! The staff is very kind and thoughtful as well! The leather chairs are comfy, so go there with time on your hands to make yourself comfy in those chairs to indulge with a book of your choice! PS they also sell amazing cards, journals...
Read moreThis beautiful and vast 3-story bookstore has a comprehensive selection. I’ve never seen a better combination of new, second-hand, and collectible old books. They’re all intermingled in an organization that makes sense. Top rows lined with leather bound volumes seem intended for decoration, but they are all for sale as well. I picked up a book at random to find a first edition Longfellow in good condition and reasonably priced.
It has an incredible atmosphere heavy timber construction combined with steady customer traffic makes it sound like you’re browsing for books inside an old ship-of-the-line at sea. Upstairs has comfortable seating near large windows to sit and read while looking out at the quaint Hay-On-Wye streets.
Very friendly staff are on every floor ready to help with enthusiasm with any of your needs.

The selection and size of the range of books is also impressive. More than in other places, you can also buy new releases here - at standard retail prices. Nevertheless, the selection of second-hand books is very impressive. Unfortunately, the lower floor, where fantasy, horror, comics and thrillers are housed, is a little lacklustre in comparison to the lofty upper floors. Nevertheless, this bookshop is an absolute must for every book fan and visitor to Hay on Wye. For historical...
