Petticoat Lane Market is a fashion and clothing market in Spitalfields, London. It consists of two adjacent street markets. Wentworth street market is open six days a week and Middlesex street market is open Sunday only (closes at 2pm). In Tudor times Middlesex street was known as Hogs Lane a pleasant lane lined by hedgerows and Elms. The market was not formally recognised until an Act of Parliament in 1936. But it's long history as an informal market makes it possibly one of the oldest surviving markets in Britain. Old Fables say that they were very popular for an eclectic selection of colourful silky petticoats.I have awarded the market five stars because I am fairly certain that I can see very interesting bargains lurking in its once murky depths. At this stage I am not 100% sure but I hope to return in the very near future to investigate. So watch this space ! Yes I thought that there was a good selection of shirts And some in my size too (XXXL). These large shirts are quite difficult to find at a good price. But I have saved myself oodles and purchased two shirts for a very comparatively...
Read moreHonestly, don’t even bother with Petticoat Lane Market. I know it’s meant to be one of the oldest street markets in London, and trust me, it shows in all the worst ways.
There’s zero sense of organisation or management. It’s messy, loud, chaotic, and honestly just not a nice place to be. The stalls mostly sell cheap, low-quality stuff like fake designer bits or mass-produced garments you’d find in the bargain bin of a dodgy shop.
It also doesn’t feel very safe. No one seems to be keeping an eye on anything, and it definitely feels like the kind of place where theft is easy and common. Just not the vibe.
I really don’t see the point of this market continuing when you’re a short walk away from Spitalfields, which has amazing food and proper vibes, or Brick Lane for way better vintage and fashion options. Petticoat Lane feels stuck in the past, and not...
Read moreI've only been to this market on a Sunday (9am - 2pm) as I was told that's the main day for seeing stalls of many different kinds selling their wares then. Smaller markets open on Monday through to Friday on Wentworth Street.
I've also been with friends and relatives throughout the years, looking for leather jackets which did appeal to them but just to browse through! The prices in the 80s-90s were already in the hundreds!
You can get some really cheap and nice food in the bargain! (Shops along the sides).
Especially during the festive season, this is one market you should try to add to your list of places to go for gift ideas.
It's an extremely busy market so expect to have to weave in and out of crowds.
The nearest tube station is Aldgate East and the nearest railway stations are Liverpool Street and...
