If you're ever in Norwich City Centre, hungry, tired of chain restaurants and are a fan of Shanghai and Singapore street food, then you owe it to yourself to visit Taste of Shanghai, tucked away within the colourful stalls of Norwich Market.
So far, I have only tasted 2 of the dishes from the menu and do intend on sampling the rest, but honestly, those 2 dishes are so good it's difficult to convince myself to try something new!
The food is cooked freshly in front of you, so you can watch Alan the owner and all that is involved in making your dish. There are a good number of menu choices, with the option of rice or noodles with all.
So far, I seem to have developed an addiction to Alan's dish of Crispy Chilli Chicken, which is absolutely delicious; sweet, spicy, savoury, succulent and of a portion size, (I usually go for the large size), that is absolutely perfect with an accompanying drink, (I recommended the canned Chinese tea as a refreshing accompaniment). That's not to say that the normal size portions are in any way to be dismissed, they're also of a good size, perfect for those without the appetite of a 20 stone Man Vs Food character like myself.
The site is always meticulously clean and Alan is one of the most charming and friendly characters you could ever hope to meet and chat with.
Sometimes, there may be a wait of 10 minutes or so when the stall is very busy, but, trust me, the food is absolutely worth the wait. It's of a quality, freshness and flavour that many should be trying to aim for.
So, if you're curious, take a chance on the Crispy Chilli Chicken dish and go from there... I'm sure you won't be disappointed and will undoubtedly end up being another regular to add to Alan's ever growing...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA regular favourite since they arrived as part of the exciting new wave of food stalls on Norwich market.
Everything cooked up fresh, so expect ~10-12 minute between ordering and it being ready, and they're good at telling you roughly how long it will be. I tend to pick a few groceries up from 2-3 other stalls, so this works well on the timing.
Expect a little more spice than more anglicised Chinese restaurants, but it's definitely not excessively hot. I also like the more pan-asian aspect, including Chicken Laksa and Katsu.
Portions substantial.
Super hard-working husband and wife team, but they still manage to be friendly in amongst rushing everything...
