Mary Rose Trading — Local services in Portsmouth

For the avoidance of doubt, this review is for the gift shop and NOT the absolutely breathtaking exhibition. Upon exiting the exhibition my 7 year old son noticed the Mary Rose plastic model by Airfix which comes with some acrylic paint and plastic glue. The sign at the store noted that due to solvents in the kit, it cannot be sold to customers under 18. I understood it out of a concern of the glue being used as a recreational drug. As my son was handling a model, a gentleman came over and told us that he is unable to sell us the model as my son is under 18. Somewhat incredulously I indicated that it’s fine as I’m over 18 (quite visibly so unfortunately). The gentleman was adamant. I gave it another shot by just removing the kit from the shelve myself, but the gentleman came over and reinforced his decision. I have indicated that I’m buying the kit for myself to which he said that “We know that you are buying the kit for your son therefore we are unable to sell it to you.” I was absolutely speechless by this application of the rule and examining my intent. This humiliating experience definitely left a bitter taste in my mouth. It is fortunate that the rule of law in our general lives is not applied under the same principle as this particular store attendant chose on this...
