Built in the 1930s with art deco notes, Boathouse 4 is now both an education centre and restoration facility for smaller historic ships. It's also the starting place for a number of boat trips and charters of those historic ships, including RAF Rescue Launches, MTGs and the last operating Falklands Campaign Landing Craft. As well as the restoration and education facilities there's also a restaurant and toilets to hand. Whilst, arguerably not as exciting as other parts of the historic dockyard, it's well worth a visit.

We really love Boathouse 4,this is the second time in twelve months we have looked in here and it's completely different, there are some fantastic projects in progress and I really wish I lived closer so I could keep nipping in so I could see the finished article, what I would say though is,there is a vast amount of skilled people working on restoring those boats and it's a joy to see, long may it continue.👌

The restaurant is one of those hidden away places that you generally only come across by chance - there were only two other tables taken when we arrived, and one of those seemed to be friends with the manager. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxed, and the food was good, but quite expensive, and our young, inexperienced waiter had trouble keeping up, even though it wasn't busy.

I regularly spend a day in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Each visit is planned for maximum enjoyment and learning. I always spend time in Boatshed4 looking closely at all the boats, tools, people at work etc. On Friday 1st July I had a 'tour' of the boatshed. A whole hour of fascinating history, interesting information, close ups of boats in different stages of repair, the skills required to renovate and repair all the beautiful wooden craft. The experience was brilliant. I hope the rumours of the impending closure of Boatshed4 are untrue. We need a current and next generation of craftsmen and women to repair and renovate all the boats, yachts and ships we enjoy and rely on. Please don't close...

Absolutely love it here! Have visited a couple of times now and can't wait to visit again. Brilliant to be able to watch restoration work being done on the boats and read about some fascinating history. The restaurant is lovely even just for a coffee and cake. Without doubt the volunteers help to make this place come alive. Highly recommend the Boathouse tour. Our guide was Gavin and he was incredible. So knowledgeable and engaging. Highly...
