I haven't been to this pub for over 30 years and my memories of it then, fading, are of a lively, noisey, establishment, full of young men in high spirits, blue uniforms and round white hats (just like what I was wearing) It was also frequented quite often by the Regulating Branch armed with night sticks and hand-cuffs. As I say, it was a lively place. On this my most recent visit, I noted the layout had completely changed and seems to have absorbed the pub next door – the King & Queen, as I recall - and had become part of the depressing Greene King expanding empire. But the purpose of this visit was because of it's Cask Marque Ale Trail and I would have visited - at least once - whatever the place was like and even if all there was to drink was the ubiqitous Abbott Ale or IPA – good enough beers, but don't they do anything else? As it happened, the place was indeed lively, although not a blue uniform to be seen and the demographic was older and more varied. But the big bonus was, Black Sheep, Flanders Fields, Gangly Ghoul and Hopspur were all to be had. In keeping with the occasion glasses of Flanders Fields (3.7%) were downed with relish. The Cask Marque accredition is suitably awarded. And yes Greene King do dispense other ales - if only the spread them to more of their pubs.

We visited the Ship Anson a week ago looking for a late breakfast and coffee before visiting the adjacent Royal Docks. The exterior is period and well maintained and attractive. The interior is traditional, and attractive albeit with multiple Sports Screens, but we did not find these intrusive or distracting. The welcome was warm and we had no trouble finding a table but I suspect that this would be more difficult later on. There is a wide selection of beverages to choose from and an excellent and traditional food menu, all at very reasonable prices. Breakfast, served until noon, is excellent and at £4.95, amazing value for money! The welcome by Keith and his team is professional and friendly, and if he can make time, Keith (from Liverpool!) will, and will tell you about the history of the pub and its connections with the Navy and Admiral Anson. Toilets - these are well maintained and spotless. All in all the Ship Anson is well worth visiting. Highly Recommended!

Where to start. I have known this pub since 1984 - it was still 2 pubs in those days!! Over the years it became the Cold War Carriers crews pub of choice. More recently it is rapidly becoming the spiritual home of the Portsmouth Royal Navy (other pubs and other Navy based are available) I booked a table for 11AM to start off a works event with breakfast, beer and England RU. Keith and his staff could not have been more helpful. Great table, good price on the beer and for £3.99 what a breakfast!!! Be wary if you wish to venture here - it is popular and does get very busy, but is that not what great pubs are supposed to do? Keith and his Staff are doing a great job at keeping this pub at the heart of everything good on Portsmouth Hard

Had lunch here after our visit to Mary Rose. It was 1 pm and the place was quite packed. We chose to order and pay at the bar and the lady in charge was friendly and having a banter with her regulars. We opted for the five plate sampler and they were okay. The chicken kariagge was definitely not done Japanese style but more like Chinese soy. It was still tasty, especially with sliced chilli. The crispy squid was calamari fritti but not too crispy. The mustard glazed sausages were actually normal hotdog sausages, and the prawn and chorizo open face sandwich was okay. The best sampler was the crispy cod fish. Also had a pint of John Smith, a sour sweet ale, and felt it was a tad light.

What is there not to like here, what was 2 pubs now rolled into one, plenty of ale on offer with good memorabilia to read with navy connections, of course inside. Greene King have a gem here and they know it, expect to pay more for your drinks due to the location. Get to sit outside or in the window and you will be opposite HMS Warrior and can watch the hustleand bustle outside. But it's a busy pub and food is on offer but plenty of seating Best pub at The Hard ? Could be. There are few in number now so use it or lose it. Ale today was Theakstons Old Perculiar. 1 star knocked off due to price.

Stopped in to have some food. The food was really nice, especially the katsu burger. However, we found the atmosphere a little hostile from the bar staff. We chose to sit on seating that was outside but sheltered and there wasn't any menus or sauces etc so I took one off of one of the tables just inside and wow did that make the staff angry, one staff member complained to another. Then came out and took it away. And the staff serving us behind the bar seemed angry too. So despite the food being nice it's nit somewhere we would return to unfortunately.
