St. Catherine's Island — Local services in Tenby

We visited here yesterday and managed to speak with one of the volunteers (dark haired lady from Birmingham, sorry, I didn't catch your name) who was an absolute delight. It is the hard work of these people that have allowed me to visit a site I've looked upon with envious eyes for over 30 years during visits to Tenby. A real bucket list moment for me to be able to access the site and understand it's history. All thanks to this small group of amazing people. Thank you. Slightly further north along the Atlantic coast is St Catherine’s Island, one of four barrier islands that make up the Golden Isles.

More than 5,500 hectares in area, the island is a haven for wildlife species, so much so that much of the interior is off-limits to visitors outside of outreach work. The island has also been declared a National Historic Landmark.

However, that doesn’t mean those based in Hinesville cannot enjoy a peek at the island. On the contrary, its beautiful beaches are open throughout the year, and its coast is a stunning area to discover by boat too.

Wonderful little tour of St. Catherine’s Island and fort . Maintenance guide very knowledgeable on history - showing pictures of how lavish it was as a private residence back in the day and information on when it was a zoo for a while. Think one of my favourite pieces was how the ‘restaurant’ board came to cover a window - ingenious use of what was to hand lol. A very interesting tour and well worth the £3.50 fee (less than the price of a decent cup of coffee really) which helps contribute to the future...
