Just returned from a wonderful dining experience at the Hope & Anchor in Tenby. This charming pub delivers exactly what you want from a quality Welsh coastal establishment - hearty portions of excellently prepared comfort food with friendly service that makes you feel right at home. The steak and ale pie was absolutely magnificent - a golden, flaky pastry casing filled with rich, tender chunks of meat swimming in a deeply flavored gravy. It came served with a generous portion of perfectly crisp chips and fresh tenderstem broccoli for a bit of green balance. Their fish and chips is equally impressive - a substantial piece of fish encased in light, crispy batter that shatters perfectly with each bite. The accompanying mushy peas had just the right consistency and flavor, and the chips were again cooked to perfection - crisp exterior with fluffy centers. What truly elevated the experience was the exceptional service. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had everything needed, offering recommendations and checking in without being intrusive. Their genuine warmth and attentiveness made the meal even more enjoyable. The rustic wooden tables and relaxed atmosphere create the perfect setting for savoring these classic pub dishes. Whether you're a local or just visiting Tenby, the Hope & Anchor is definitely worth seeking out for a satisfying meal in comfortable surroundings. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic, well-executed pub fare with a warm welcome.

I've been reading other reviews and wish I had taken note on their advise beforehand. I recommended my family to try this one but have received bad review. They ordered the fish pie and the seabass from the specials board, plus a child's sausage & chips. The two adult meals were mediocre, nothing special. The main issue is the child's meal. On the menu, which was poorly worded, implied kids meals came with chips (or potatoes) and side salad (with peas/beans available as options). However it arrived as literally some sausages and chips on a plate. No salad, no vegetables, nothing. They questioned the server about this, and he "went away to check", then came back and said the meal given was correct, as customers are supposed to specifically say they want salad, otherwise it's not included. Given the description on the menu they found that to be unacceptable. Not least because they don't know how they can justify a complete lack of veg/salad as a fully rounded meal for a child. They didn't want to have a big argument about it so some salad was shared, but the poor customer service did let down the experience. This is just to show that their the menu is not clear, that they would rather save some pitiful amount of money by expecting customers to ask for it (which is completely ridiculous), and were willing to blame the customer when the customer raise the issue. There are much better restaurants in Tenby so do yourself a favour, try others!

Just had a meal (21/8/23 @ 6pm) and was shocked at how rude the lady at the bar was with shoulder length light brown/ dark blonde hair with grey patterned cardigan on. She took my order but was so incredibly rude as if she couldn’t be arsed to take it. When I asked if they do local draft beers, she pointed to a row of beers which I couldn’t see as I was standing on the corner and customers in front. I asked what she recommended and she just shrugged. I’m so annoyed I didn’t walk out at that point. I would have walked out had it not been raining and peak season trying to get a table elsewhere. Husband had belly pork that was delicious and we can’t fault it. We also had the fish and chips which was disappointing. Batter poor, fish fairly small for price, chips bog standard frozen. No tartar sauce and when I asked I got 2 plastic sachets ( really in a restaurant at that price ?) It’s dog friendly, I have no problem with that, but when one particular dog was barking throughout the duration of meal I feel staff should quietly have a word with owner as don’t want to listen to that. Disappointed as we saw how busy it was earlier in that day and was looking forward to it.

RISE IN PRICES - DIP IN QUALITY...

We have been regulars at this lovely pub for many years and we have loved our visits there. Previously, the food has always been excellent and I can count two occasions when we had a mediocre meal, which we just put down to the volume of customers/ a bad day in the kitchen at the time.

However, having watched the prices in this pub skyrocket over a six month period while the food quality decreases I am now prompted to write this review after a recent poor dining experience.

Almost every meal in this pub has now gone up in price by approximately £3 within the last 6-8 months. you won't get much/any change from £50 if you simply have two main courses and two pints anymore. We are now talking pub food in a very casual setting but at restaurant prices.

In the summer, we ordered the vegetarian pasta dish which was £12.50 and very very tasty. Our vegetarian guest loved it. Fast forward to our visit in December on a relatively quiet evening, and the same meal is now £15.50 and really not even half as delicious as before. It's pasta. With tomato sauce. With some veg. Probably some of the cheapest ingredients out there and sauce no doubt from a jar.

I wouldn't expect to pay £15.50 for a basic tomato/veg pasta even in an Italian restaurant. I could understand if it was a seafood/meat dish- but it isn't. This meal does not justify a £15.50 price tag at all.

Furthermore, two of us ordered the kerala curried fish. We have had this same meal a number of times before and it was previously lovely. This time, it was a teeny tiny piece of cod with rubbery grey, uncrispy skin, sitting sadly in a bowl of thin yellow water with some rice floating in there somewhere. It tasted of...nothing...no curry flavour, in fact, no flavour at all. We had to send it back and were told that the supplier had changed and the chef agreed that the sauce wasn't right.

So, why would you send it out then?

Yes, we had a refund for the two fish mains for which we are grateful, and the staff are kind and friendly as always. But we had bought drinks and sides in anticipation of a great meal which also costs wasted money. Our evening meal for the evening for two people consisted of chips and onion rings.

It's so disappointing when you love going somewhere so much but you can no longer rely on the quality or the value for money. I really hope this place ups the game so we don't have to look for a...

Friendly place to eat , dog friendly which is great , lovely coffees , the muscles were good 👍 , however chips were a little bland and the batter on the cod tasted unseasoned. Service was good , polite and prompt

We have re- visited this place today 29/8/23 , hoping for a lovely lunch, and we got to the bar half hour early , so we had a cuppa until the kitchen was open , i went back to the bar at 11:55, to order another drink , and asked if they could take the pre-order for my lunch at same time , to be told no kitchen doesn't open til 12 , seriously! Its 5 mins ! The lady with the dark blonde hair was uncompromising with it , so busy standing around doing nothing else apart from talking to the other staff I went back to my table and waited for the 5 mins , and 1 for luck and returned to the bar , and ordered my drink which came with a whole 1 ( singular) ice cube, and said id like to order my food now , the gent who was serving me , had to check if the kitchen was now open , to which she nodded her head like the man from del-monte .... she says yes ! I was asked which table , to which i said i dont know what number and pointed to the one in the corner. I returned to my table ( now only half an ice cube left)to wait for lunch The restaurant started to fill , and the table next to us was occupied by a nice family who went up and ordered shortly after us ., im sure their drinks came back with more ice cubes ( #icecubeenvy is a real thing!) Our food arrived... but no cutlery on the table , then someone brought the table number over( should have been on tbe tables already) , then the cutlery arrived , was asked if we would like sauces , at which point we realised no salt or pepper on the table either. We tucked into our meal , and it was really nice , but that was the last we saw of anybody, except when someone came to check on the table next to us , and ask if their meal was ok , and if they wanted anything else? It would have been nice if anyone had checked on us . Maybe they were too busy standing around ... who knows ? Not sure what we did wrong ....maybe it was because i had the audacity of trying to order our lunches 5 mins early !!? Service in our experience has gone down hill while the the food was improved Not sure will be returning for a 3rd...
