Fareway Meat and Grocery — Local services in Ames

I have shopped here for years, and the meat counter had been great overall.

Over the summer, I got several packages of beer brats when I ordered regular brats, but I worked trough that.

Today, I bought a couple of steaks, including. Sirloin strip, to grill for dinner. 2.5 hours of being in frig after purchase and I unwrapped it to add spices before grilling. Steak was a dark gray throughout.

Needless to say, I took it back to the store. I expected an apology and a new steak.

Instead I got an attitude at the meat counter from a young kid who insisted dark gray is the perfect color for a steak. He then decided to mock me when I wanted it returned.

Long story short, I left the steak and my money at the store. And, I am leaving you this message to say this place isn't as great as it...

The Fareway in downtown Ames is a good place for groceries and deals. But don't count on it for your special recipie. While they have a good variety for staples the selection for bread spices and seafood is limited. For example, I often want pretzel buns for burgers but these are rarely available here. Fresh basil, too, is often hard to find in their aisles. Despite this, Fareway is great for most weekly grocery needs and their prices are good. Lastly, while it considerate of them to bag your groceries, they do not make it easy to bag your own if thats what you prefer. The short checkout lanes and tight quarters make it awkward to go between the baggage area and the till, especially if you have a cart. The workers are friendly but usually...

I wanted to share about a very positive experience I had at the meat department on Saturday. The man cutting my meat went above and beyond cutting the steaks exactly how I wanted them, matching a competitor ad, and educating me on their meat and the quality of their meat. I always look for value and this exceeded my expectations. I have been shopping at Fareway for years but this was one of the best experiences I had ever had. Hats off to the downtown Ames meat department.
