Visiting Astoria in the first weekend of spring, I knew I was taking a chance with the weather. Sure enough, it turned out to be a wet one! To make sure I got out, I had a look at yoga studios in the area. I've done a bit of "travel yoga," and I can say The Fire Station's website stands out in terms of giving a clear picture of how to enjoy the experience, which I really appreciated as an out-of-towner. I put it on my calendar to visit first thing both mornings.

Sure enough, I had a first-class experience. First off, I cannot understate how handsome that space is. The aesthetic of an historic building with vintage decor and modern equipment is so good.

The Saturday hot yoga class was excellent. Even though I arrived extra-early, the instructor had clearly already been there for some time: they had all the heat lamps and a humidifier going, and the temp was already waay up. Starting my day in that beautiful space, with the coastal morning light beaming through the (artificial) fog and striking the weathered hardwood was 🔥.

Sunday's flow class was also great; this time, I arrived just before class started, but the instructor still recognized me as new and made sure to check me in and point out where to find the bolsters and blocks and generally make me feel welcome.

As a visitor, I really appreciated both Saturday and Sunday's instructors' strong clarity of cues; we did a few moves which were rather novel (for me, at least), but I never felt "lost."

Three things I'll add that I didn't see on the website: they have "loaner" mats, there's a pair of little changing rooms, and the Firefighters' Museum on the first floor is super neat and worth looking around after class.

10/10 would recommend and looking forward to attending every time I'm in Astoria. Turned out to be one of the highlights of my weekend!

UPDATE 11/10 - I left my favorite beanie in a cubby on my way out Sunday; I didn't realize until maybe an hour later, and had to hit the road before the next time the doors would be unlocked. I fired off a plaintive email with half-hope it would actually be answered...Not only did I get a near-immediate reply, they actually found and mailed my crusty old hat back to me right away. Above and beyond...

I have so much gratitude for the yoga community I have found here in Astoria, where I can show up for myself and practice compassion and patience with my body. I feel such mental and physical inner strength from the past several months of my practice. I love going to the hot yoga classes and workshops, which are for all levels. The instructors are passionate about what they do, have integrity with their business, and they have really helped me explore and improve...
