Long ago I was told I was funny looking and I misunderstood, so I became a comedian.
There is no way I can adequately describe the experience I had at The Comedy Workshoppe headed by Comedy Coach Extraordinaire, Jeff Justice.
I took the class two times in a row, not being able to graduate the first time due to work conflicts, but after thinking about it, I was twice as funny as my graduating class. We were told that we had to use all original material that we write ourselves. We all learned how to do that and managed to amuse ourselves in the process. The course was just fun!
There are several points I want to make, not about the course, but how it change my life. I was in printing sales at the time, and believe me, it made me way more confident in myself and my skills as a salesman and a human.
In addition, it opened my eyes to all things funny, and how to make them even funnier, just from stuff you see and experience in everyday life.
One thing I learned is how many varied types of comedy I could perform. Of course there's standup. Another of my favorites is conversational comedy, with strangers and friends, you know, that daily interaction with individuals and small groups (my favorite). And that wonderful thing called life which has infinite possible comedic topics and impromptu venues.
The best thing I learned was observational skills; finding something funny is just about everything. I even managed to make a hilarious joke out of a salt shaker(!) The classes Jeff constructed taught us those skills very very well.
One more thing: Jeff promised everyone in the class that they'd "kill" at our graduation, and we did. All of us. Everyone. Fat bald salesmen, punk rock wise guys, goth girls with piercings, hippie chicks, insurance salesmen from central Georgia and every type of unexpected people. I took the course in 1996 here in Atlanta, right around the Olympics in July. It was a magic time ("even my bathtub had 5 rings...") and I am a much better man through my comedy. I'm writing it at a breakneck pace; now I just have to get up the nerve to do it again.
Thank you, thank you thank you, Jeff. (I can never thank...
Read moreI had never done standup before so I was plenty nervous starting Jeff's class. His decades of experience really shines through as a teacher and I was so thoroughly impressed with where we started on day 1 to where we ended up at our graduation show! Jeff breaks comedy down in digestible chunks and walks you through the anatomy of a joke. Out of all the things I've done, standup was literally the hardest thing I've attempted ... and I've had to learn how to take care of a stroke patient and also how to buy a house! I cannot recommend this class enough, however! It was well worth the money and now I appreciate standup on a whole new level. My advice: listen to and incorporate Jeff's feedback and invest time in the homework! I am so glad I did this and I think more people should take his class. He also offers a professionally cut recording of your graduation set and a helpful...
Read moreJeff Was Average. He wasn't terrible and he wasn't Great. I volunteered and Jeff quickly agreed to have the Class Meet at MY condo for Rehearsal and then I asked Jeff for a favor Back. I asked to go in the Last THREE of our show and HE totally Dissed me and PUT me in the first three after I spent Money on Food and alcohol for HIS class to meet at my Crib. You will learn the mechanics of jokes with Jeff, BUT you will also Get a Teacher that thinks HE Is a Celebrity. HE is an average Comedy Teacher, that GOES below average when HE uses HIS students and then Disses them. Here is MY advice. SKIP comedy classes and Watch Real COMEDY! Write YOUR jokes Quick! With as FEW of WORDS as POSSIBLE! Screw Jeff Justice and other Teachers.. THOSE That can DO those...
