The positive reviews of Labors of Love surprise me. I've given them 4 chances over the past year or so. I've had 1 positive experience, 1 average, and 2 horrible. I'm done now.
I've been sewing, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and embroidering since I was a small child. For a while, I was the president of a large regional sewing guild. So I have been in more needlework, fabric, & yarn shops in my lifetime than I can count. I've never been treated with as much contempt as I have in this shop. I would chalk it up to a bad day if it was only one time, but it wasn't, which is why I'm writing a review -- something I've done only a handful of times in my life.
I stopped in quickly with my son today to pick up a few additional skeins of thread, needles, and a replacement set of stretcher bars. The woman who "helped" (a term I use very loosely here) me would barely speak to me, opening her mouth only to criticize my choice of needles ("You really want THESE?"), ignoring my son when he directly asked questions (even though he does needlepoint too! With a children's kit I bought him from this very shop!), etc. I had to repeatedly state that I wanted to get some thread because she was so clearly trying to get us out of there that I didn't even feel comfortable walking to the back for thread. She actually seemed angry about my hyphenated last name during checkout (??). She was so hostile that I was shaken up in the car when we left.
My daughter is very sick right now, and I just wanted to take a quick break from caring for her to get some needlepoint supplies to help get me through this time. Never again. In the future, I'll just drive up to Nimble Needle, where the people are never angry that they have customers, and the selection, prices, and vibe are better, even if the drive up there is awful.
I do have to say that there is one really lovely employee at LoL. I think her name is Charlotte. She has very short salt-and-pepper hair. She is wonderful.
It's sad because this place is so close to me and I really want to support a local business, but if I'm so anxious when I leave a needlepoint store (of all things!) that I am shaking when I get to my car,...
Read moreEdited to add: I decided to call the store owner Mark to discuss my experience. He was very nice and heard me out and apologized for the rude treatment which was apparently a theme with this employee. They kitted my canvas and wrote a handwritten card to follow up in order to make things right which I really appreciate. I am hopeful that things will flip around and based on the reviews and knowing no one is encountering said employee, it looks like it’s becoming a more enjoyable needlepoint store!
Just started learning needlepoint with a basic class and decided to purchase my first nice canvas with a sale they were having. When the sales lady Barbara called to speak to me about threads, I thought they would be open to teaching and informing about what I should buy. She was sooooo rude and basically scoffed at my skill level. Telling me the ONLY way she would send me full coverage threads was if I promised to learn a certain stitch and use a stretcher bar. It got to the point that I asked if I could just cancel my order if my skill is going to “insult the trade” to which she replied that I could not. I finally just told her to send the canvas and forget the threads, I’ll match them somewhere else.
I crochet beautiful work and wanted to learn a new skill. I will NEVER purchase from the shop again. It’s a ton of money to spend to be...
Read moreLabors of Love Needlepoint is such a gem in Atlanta! I started going to their Wednesday night stitch nights without knowing anything about needlepoint, and everyone was so kind, welcoming, and patient in teaching me. Thanks to their help, I’m now working on my second canvas and completely hooked!
The shop itself is a creative and inviting space that I genuinely love spending time in. Their selection of threads is absolutely beautiful, and they're constantly getting in new canvases with a wide range of styles to choose from.
Mark, the owner, is always friendly and welcoming, and the entire staff is incredibly knowledgeable. They’re happy to answer any question, big or small, and always create a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced stitcher, this is the perfect place to be inspired and grow your skills. It is more than just a shop, it is...
