Went in to get my old Dyson repaired, couldn't be done. Russ, the owner, offered to exchange it for a fully refurbished one of the exact same model for just a little extra cash. Great deal! As I was walking out, I longingly looked at the row of Kirbys and went back to ask him about them. He leans back in his chair and asks, "Do you want to know the TRUTH about vacuum cleaners?". My God, Russ! Of COURSE I want to know the TRUTH about vacuum cleaners!!! This gentleman, who has clearly been selling vacuums since before I was born, proceeded to give me a very persuasive presentation about canister/tubes/uprights/beater bars/metal vs plastic/planned obsolescence/etc. Anyway, I bought a new vacuum. A Sanitaire, which I recommend. Even more so, I suggest buying it from a local business owner that will hook you up with service extras, accessories, and most importantly...

Customer service above and beyond! I took in my Shark vacuum on a Saturday and it was ready for me (after a 4-hour! tune-up, unclogging and cleaning) on Monday late afternoon. I couldn't make it to pick up before closing time, so the owner waited for me! AND he took the vacuum out to my car, put it in the trunk for me, and opened my door!

Just as importantly, the Shark now runs like it hasn't in ages. Super powerful suction again and excellent pickup. I have two long-haired cats, so there's lots of fur, and scattered cat litter - and one of the cats likes to shred cardboard into little bits, so there's that too - and the vacuum picked everything up easily. No spitting anything out either, which it had been doing recently. The only downside was that I hated to get the vacuum dirty again after it was shined up so...
