Mayflower Book Store — Local services in Berkley

I had a horrible experience going in the store. When I walked in I was so excited because this store was everything that I've been looking for. The man that runs the store treated me very horribly and said that I couldn't stay because I "wasn't over 18". If this is a rule at your store then maybe you should put a sign in front of you store stating that. The store was beautiful and I was very excited to look around. I had so many questions and the man was on the phone the whole time and I didn't get a chance to ask​ any. The man said I could look around for a few minutes and barely 2 minutes had passed before he kicked me out and claimed that he was "about to close" even though it was 40 minutes until the stores closing time. He said I could come back with a parent or someone over 18 if I wanted to look around. Hopefully when I go back I'll have a better experience and actually get to look around and talk to the man and ask questions. This place is a metaphysical or spiritual bookstore with some random used books. In addition to books on religion and the occult, they have a selection of tarot cards, crystals, incense, and other spiritual items.

This store is not a place for kids. There are no children's books, and the books are haphazardly stacked dangerously high. Another reviewer described the store layout as "looks like a library exploded" or possibly hit by a tornado. Most items appear not to have a price, and prices seem to be generated spontaneously by the owner on the spot. My own experience was that his quoted prices were very high, but perhaps some feel they are paying for this kind of experience.

The owner is an outgoing charismatic character who appears to create the ambiance reflected in his items within the shop. This shop is an excellent place if this appeals to you and you're looking for this vibe. Some people rate this store very highly for this interaction and experience. This is not a book store. It's more of a storage area. You cannot walk around very easily because of the mess and also the male employee will follow your every move being very invasive. He is not interested in selling anything but mass produced paperbacks you can find cheap online. I finally just bought one to be polite and leave but realize now that he desecrated the book with a ink stamp of his shops logo. This is a big pet peeve of mine. I can't stand when people de-value items by writing their name or store info on the inside pages of a perfectly new book.
