On one weekend trip up to Big Bear Mountain, one of our friends recommended a pie shop we try before heading home. Arriving only one hour after the shop opened, we had heard the savory pies available wouldnāt be ready to order for a couple hours. I originally intended to buy a savory pie, but sadly the desire was immediately crushed. However, this just left the opportunity to try the sweet pies. Naturally, I ordered one slice of each pie offered that day. Thatās right, I ordered one piece of every sweet pie just to write this review. And I didnāt just take a bite of each, I slammed all 5 pieces. The pies I had that day were the Blackstrap Molasses, Thyme Blueberry, Dutch Apple, Caramel Pumpkin, and Mixed Berry. Each slice was truly impressive in itās own right, but luckily it was easy to pick the very best which happened to be the Molasses slice. I had no idea what to anticipate as Iād never even heard of a molasses pie but thatās what made the impression so memorable. It was creamy, full of a maple flavor, and it can only be described in one word as āheavenlyā. The shop is so quaint, itās in such an amazing location being in Big Bear, and the staff were delightful. Instead of giving me whipped cream on each slice like I ordered, they just gave me a bowl of it to use myself. Like, this place spoke to my stomach and trust me when I say a food-coma was in the cards that day.
Summary: The pie was to die for. I recommend calling in to learn how to get your hands on some savory pie because it goes fast. Donāt take your chances going in later in the day, being there literally after they open is your best bet because the pie is so good EVERYONE is trying to get their hands on some. Itās not a bad thing that the shop runs out like some reviewers have said, itās freaking impressive and speaks volumes on...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreEvery time we're in the area, we have to stop in and get some pie. There is limited parking spots in the lot and the exterior of the building is cute and whimsical. It's hard to miss. There is no indoor seating and it's pick up only. You can call and pre-order but you'd still have to wait in line to pay and pick up your order. We've been here a handful of times already. Last year in October, we arrived literally 5 minutes after they opened and by the time I got to the front of the line 20 minutes later, they were almost sold out of everything. I ended up with a whole Dutch apple pie and a slice of caramel pumpkin pie. The Dutch apple pie was soooo good.
We were here yesterday and this time we arrived 20 minutes before they opened at 10:30am. There was already a line forming outside. I got a whole Mixed Berry Pie ($38) and two chicken pie pies ($18/each). The thing about the pies here is that you can taste all the ingredients from the buttery crust to fresh fruit. This was our first time trying their pot pies. They are frozen and you have to cook them yourself. Unfortunately mine didn't come with baking instructions but glad someone posted it on Yelp. Set oven to 375 and cook for 90 minutes (sometimes longer depending on your oven). I rotated the pot pies halfway through and at the end needed and extra 5 minutes to get up to internal temp. Wow they were so flavorful and super flaky crust my husband was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe stopped by because I like to find local places with unusual names when traveling. Always try to support small businesses. The building looks very interesting from the outside. We came in 2 hours after they opened. Unfortunately they were out of all whole pies. Only had a small selection of pie slices. The pot pies are only frozen. You have to take them home to cook. Since we're from out of town we didn't find much that would work for us. We stayed at at a lovely B&B while in town. No oven for our use. Ended up with some coffee. As we were leaving some guy that was heavily pierced with large gages in his ears and rather scary looking to me yelled at us to park in the parking lot within the lines. He walked by us twice before coming back a third time to yell at us. We were the only car in the parking lot. When we pulled up we parked next to another car that was parked in the same fashion. I was wondering why this guy was yelling about how we parked. I looked around for some lines noticed some increadably faint lines. You really have to look for the lines to determine where they are. I'm rather a stickler for parking straight. Apparently some places are having problems with rude people in this town. There's a sign up inside the pie place that asks people to be nice. Perhaps this guy is one of those rude people in which the sign referred. It's best to not confront people like this. Just move...
