Unfortunately, this was the worst beard trim I've ever received. I haven't been clean shaven for about 4 years, and had had a beard off and on for several years prior. I usually trim my own beard, but I will schedule an appointment with a barber every now and then for special occasions. There's a place I have really enjoyed visiting the last several years, but I moved away last summer and spent months searching for somewhere that might be able to provide a similar service experience. After my visit to Savant Bountiful Barbershop, I'm committed to making the hour and a half drive for all future haircuts and beard trims.
This place looked promising from the reviews but fell so short on all fronts. I booked an appointment with the manager. He showed up 15 minutes late; he didn't apologize, just explained that he manages multiple locations. The experience in the chair was extremely unpleasant. I was nauseated instantly because of how bad he smelled and had to breathe through my nose to fight back vomit several times. The unprofessional and demeaning way he spoke to the other barbers on staff also made me very uncomfortable.
I told him that I liked the shape of my beard exactly as it was, specifically where the neck and cheeklines were, just that I wanted it a bit shorter. I mentioned exactly how I want it and that I like it that way because my mustache doesn't fully connect to the rest of my beard. He ignored that and brought the cheeklines so low they nearly reached my bottom jaw. He also more than doubled the width of the gap between my cheeks and mustache. I ended up with a neckbeard that wasn't even visible when looking at me straight-on. He asked if I wanted my sideburns blended in, I said sure, then he buzzed nearly 3 inches above my ears. I've been growing my hair out for three years now, and when I saw what he had done, I was so depressed I wouldn't leave the house for several days. The shaping of the beard was so weird, uneven, and poorly done I had to fix it that night myself. It's been 5 weeks since, and my beard still hasn't recovered enough for me not to be embarrassed to take pictures.
The entire time, he kept trying to explain how to trim/care for my beard myself and why/how to use oil and balm. He was talking to me as if I had just recently grown my facial hair for the first time, and this was the first ever trim. I explained that I had a beard care routine and products I really enjoyed, but that I'd keep them in mind next time I ran out of something. He didn't listen to anything I said because right after that, he said, "Since you've never used beard oil before, I'll grab some for you to smell." The orange cream one smelled ok, but the others were not enjoyable.
He tried to explain to me why I shouldn't use shaving cream because it's a soap, not a lubricant. He then attempted to shave my neck after wetting it with only beard oil. As could be expected, my remaining neck stubble was just as thick after. The surfactants in "soapy" shaving creams and gels are crucial to reduce surface tension and lift hair away from the skin. Shaving creams also do, in fact, contain lubricants, like certain polysaccharides or humectants, including glycerin. His attempt using only oil didn't give me anything resembling a close shave, and left me more cuts and irritation than I've had since I first learned to shave at 13.
I cannot speak on the performance of the other barbers, but I would not recommend a beard trim from the manager to anyone. Right now my review is one out of five stars, but if the barbershop responds to this review with the same copy-paste message that they automatically send to everyone who leaves a negative review, just know that I'd edit my review to one-half stars out of...
