I can never find the specials with the right color of dots or stars.
This is an issue I’ve noticed at several Dollar General stores, but one I’ve generally noted and ignored. Recently, though, I had a pretty sketchy experience at another Dollar General in which no item I purchased rang up at the price listed—the situation was evidently so common that the cashier working there made a point of saying, “They’re tricky like that sometimes—“ and so, I can not let today’s oddity pass without commenting.
Amongst other things, I’m a toy collector, restorer, and customizer. And every now and then, I’ll check a Dollar General’s selection.
Today (August 18, 2023), I visited, and noted a sign in the toy section promoting 70% off the listed price on toys with a label with a blue dot. Naturally, I couldn’t find any product with blue dots. I did find labels with blue stars, yellow stars, yellow dots, and a fair amount of product with no price labels at all!
Now, I can’t say how long this particular special lasted at this store as I seldom shop at that store. I have shopped at two other Dollar General stores in the last week, and I have not noted such a special. I also cannot say if a similar type of special exists in other parts of the store, since I don’t shop other parts of the store.
Even worse, I found two of the exact product listed at exactly the same price ($5), but with different symbols. One had a blue star, one had a yellow star!
The product was a Chap Mei “Wild Quest” Ocean Playset with a manta ray.
As I’ve mentioned earlier, I’ve seen this at other Dollar Generals. And is it any wonder, that the quote, “They’re tricky like that sometimes” remains with me?
Edit (9-6-24):
Well, they were tricky again. I swore I would return to the Dollar General Unit 127 in Toledo again, but yesterday I was with someone who wanted candy, and I was there and returned.
And I found an odd special (see third photo): a buy one toy bearing the right color symbol, get a second for 75% off. I picked up two Ycoo Biopod model toys with blue stars on the price tag. The signage showed an interesting trend: there were items with three different sets of colors and shapes were on sale.
When the cashier rang up the items, the discount wasn’t honored. I showed the cashier the pic of the sign I took, and she hemmed and hawed and seemed to work to find a loophole until she finally found that the special had expired, which is true.
I can’t remember a store not honoring a sale whose sign was still up, even if the deal was expired.
The cashier wasn’t happy when I said I just wanted the candy.
“They’re tricky about that sometimes.”

Read moreI attempted to use their buy online and pick up in store option and it was worthless. Their website showed that they had items in stock but, when I arrived at the store to pick up my order, it was incomplete. They were out of 2 of the things I was trying to purchase. Since 2 of the things were the last they had in stock, I asked if I could cancel my order and buy them or add to my online order and I was told that there was no way to do that. The only thing I could do was to wait until the next day after they cancelled my order at the end of the night and the things were restocked. Also, their entrance is not easily handicap accessible. They do not have an electric door and their handicap parking spots are farther from the door than regular...
