Iâve always supported Dickâs Sporting Goods because of its strong values â especially its visible support for inclusion, diversity, and LGBTQ+ rights. Thatâs why what happened at the Brick, NJ location on July 13th really surprised and disappointed me.
It was an extremely hot day, and after a long bike ride, I was overheated and dizzy. I met a friend outside the store and chose to wait in the entry vestibule, not the store itself, while she went in to find water. I had removed my shirt during the last mile of my ride to try and cool down. Feeling faint, I briefly sat on a cardboard box to rest.
A female employee came through, asked me politely not to sit on the box, and despite my initial snippy response (I wasnât feeling great), she smiled and later returned to let me know I was welcome to stay â just please donât sit on the box. That kindness stuck with me.
Before we left, I felt bad for snapping at her and asked my friend to go back into the store to find her so I could apologize. Thatâs when the assistant store manager Ron came out â not to help or understand the situation â but to raise his voice at me and say: âNo one wants to see a shirtless old guy standing in front of the store.â
I was stunned. I wasnât trying to enter the store. I wasnât making a scene. I was simply trying to recover from heat exhaustion in the shade of the entryway. What I didnât expect was to be humiliated in public for how I look and how old I am.
Look, I understand that stores have rules â but rules can be enforced with basic human decency. I wasnât breaking anything. I was just vulnerable for a moment. A kind manager might have asked if I was okay. Or offered water. Or calmly reminded me of the storeâs policy. Instead, I got age-shamed and barked at in front of other customers.
One employee acted with compassion. The manager Ron acted with cruelty. And for a company that claims to champion inclusion and respect, thatâs a real disconnect.
Iâm not writing this to cancel anyone. I just hope someone higher up sees this and realizes that what you promote in your marketing has to be lived out in your stores â even (especially) in small...
Read moreFive star experience. Went in with almost no fishing knowledge to invest in first rod/reel and such - quickly got frustrated and overwhelmed. Was ready to leave the store when my fiancé came across Robbie.
Heâs a fishing enthusiast and helped every step of the way, was clear and concise. Made it clear where I did and didnât need to spend money, had lots of helpful tips, even showed me how to properly use the bait I bought.
So why is it two stars? You guessed it. Cashiers with the personality of a wet paper bag, and the customer service of a rock.
Had a $20 off coupon of a $100+ purchase - which was quite literally the reason I decided to go all out at Dicks as opposed to picking up a cheapy at Walmart/amazon. I do not mind that the coupon was not accepted. I do mind however that when the coupon didnât scan my cashier asked the older cashier next to her why it wasnât going through - she gave a quick (and unnecessarily angry) âwell something on it is probably not included so itâs not going to work. If it doesnât can the coupon doesnât workâ - and left it at that.
Itâs so extremely disappointing to hit a cash register like a kid in a candy store, excited and jazzed about your purchase, sales person was even hyping you up, only to run into a burnt out jerk on the register? Iâd rather stand in a 2 hour check out line than run into an employee like that.
10/10 will be back to show Robbie a pic of the first catch, as requested. But 10/10 will not be purchasing anything further here as I wouldnât want to risk upsetting the older woman on front register by...
Read moreMy friend and I were searching for (at the time a weather-appropriate item, quality gloves that did not break the bank.) After searching many department stores prior to visiting Dick's, we had no luck. This was around the 2017 holiday shopping season, so going to different stores was quite a hassle-with the lines and parking and shoppers, etc. However, Dick's had exactly what we needed! It was easy to find the perfect pair of gloves to fit the bill, and the checkout process was very efficient, without there being a super long line like there seemed to be everywhere else. Dick's really does have a variety of sporting goods and items; a very wide selection compared to other stores selling similarly-themed sporting goods. Dick's has a more comprehensive...
