AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Oh wait, you probably can't because they've established a monopoly on cable/internet service in Brookings SD. Brookings city leaders need to do their jobs and look at this review and many others. Mediacom = 0 stars. It's sickening.
This is unacceptable.
With basic TV & Tier 2 (out of 3 tiers) internet you're paying 230+ dollars after the promotion period ends. This "promotion" ended many years ago. We've been a customer for 20+ years. What this means, in our experience, is 20 years of fee increases along with terrible service across both internet and cable TV.
If you call customer service.. guess what.. they know you're from Brookings and do nothing because they know their "customers" have no alternative options. They don't care if you cancel. They're actually argumentative, happy to cancel your services on the spot, and fully enabled to be unhelpful/uncaring because they see that you're from Brookings.
To top it off, we pay for "300 Mbps" internet. Oh wait again, it's actually marketed as "up to 300Mbps" even though the bill shows you're paying for the 300Mbps package. So I guess they can avoid accountability for actually providing anything near what you're paying for.
No matter what time of day, online speedtests show that we're getting between 8 and 20 Mbps for downloads. "Up to 300Mbs" really means that a household in Brookings will get 8-20MBps. Is that worth 100 dollars a month for internet by itself? (Don't get me started on the other 130+ dollars for basic cable TV/month).
If I were go guess, they probably throttle households in Brookings with less download speeds. Why would they give decent service to an area they have a monopoly on when they can focus providing bandwidth to an area where they have competition?
We've had this issue for years. Multiple techs have arrived, looked at things, changed cables, changed modems, etc. It's all a game. The only advice was to upgrade to a more expensive internet package. (which we did by upgrading from 100Mbps to 300Mbps)

Read moreIn my town I only have the option of two different wifi/cable companies to choose from, one is super expensive, so I went with MediaCom. Now I am wishing I would have just paid the extra couple dollars for the other.
When I first set up my wifi it was fine, it worked well for the two people in my apartment, but I had to leave for the summer so I unplugged my router for the 2 months I was gone. When I came back and plugged it back in, I suddenly didn't have wifi, and my network name was no where to be found. I called and told them the problem and they told me to go to the store to get a new router, when I arrived they tried to charge me for a new one saying it was my fault that it didn't work, when I pushed back and refused they were very rude to me and gave in and let me have it for free. However when I went to set it up, they had forgotten to clear the previous users info from it so it was un-useable to me. I had to call 4 different times and talk to three different people before I found someone who was helpful (and not rude to me) and actually knew how to fix this problem. It has been working fine ever since, but my rate also went up $20 with out any notification.
Also the last 10 days I have gotten a call from MediaCom about promotions and extra services, EVERY SINGLE DAY, I have called back 4 times now telling them that I am not interested and this is becoming harassment, I told them to put me on the do not call list but was told that it would take 30 days for that to process. HOW IS IT THAT IT TAKES 30 FREAKING DAYS for me to be put on a simple list. Long story short, NEVER go through MediaCom, they are terrible with customers and half the time do not know what is going on or how to help you, they will blame you for things that are clearly not your fault and will treat you like dirt...
