Búho — Local services in Brownsville

Good deal of a bookstore - provides a quality used book service, not just atmosphere:

I was initially skeptical of the store, as I thought the atmosphere meant there would be few books of choice, and the books would be feature a considerable hikeup. (I've been to used bookstores books not worth $20 being sold for $25)

I got a good quality, used paperback at $17 here before discount.

Furthermore, unlike any other used bookstore I've been in before, not only do they stock a small selection of recently published books, but they do a good job curating the used books they carry. I don't feel like I'm digging though 90% trash. So while it has a bit fewer shelves, the shelves contain consistent quality. I don't expect to find 5 tossed away copies of Larry Niven hahaha.

I feel I can discover nice books here and take him home the same day. A worthwhile service.

I'd love to see the store carry some more Sci-Fi, Non-Fiction publications, and potentially some Oxford History & Dover Book publications. But that's just wishlisting...

This place is EVERYTHING a book store should be: -Carefully curated collection of high quality used books, all of the best quality and price (with sticky note flags with the publication year and notables about the edition lovingly adorning each one) -magically old building with deep leather couches placed in just the right amount of light, surrounded by the aroma of old paper and dreams -Abundant versions of all the best popular paperbacks for tourists looking to pick up a banger for a day at the beach -Interesting art and curios for owl inspired hearts -Host of 24 hour Harry Potter Marathons -And last of all: the thing that makes a bookstore a magic special bookstore is the owner and this one is especially blessed: Buho is the dream of a friendly quiet bilingual Mr. Darcy who will reveal his stunning smile and the poetry in his eyes if you talk about books you love, and gave this writer a free tote bag because I told him I was there looking for voices to inspire me. Today, August 24, 2023, was my second visit to Búho. The first was in April of this year.

All the reviews comment on the owner being friendly and helpful and I have to agree. It's a very different experience from going to one of the big chain bookstores. There are new books by currently popular writers and a large selection of used books.

I mainly buy used classical literature and historical fiction. There is always a good selection of both, and at good prices. In April, I spent $11 on three paperback titles. Today, I spent $20 on two hardback titles. I plan to keep returning as I make my way through them.
