Hi Everybody, the Historic Brownsville Museum is the place to get an unusual history and perspective of Brownsville ; overlooking the old train depot where it was built. Surrounded by palms and a well ordered explosion of luscious vegetation, one of the first things you will be greeted with is the shiny polished train engine itself. The house museum is overflowing with period photos from the Mexican American war and as well as artifacts from the last battle of the Civil War which was fought and WON in Fort Brown where the current university is located; unfortunately the news that the South had officially surrendered to the North not yet arrived at the southernmost tip of Texas! This must have come as a crushing surprise to the many famous generals and worn out soldiers who fought here. Many of whom didn't make it home. A large black and white photo of an officer looking down at rows of deceased soldiers that hangs on the side of one of the UTRGV buildings as you head north towards to the highway really brings this reality home. Nevertheless this vivid Spanish colonial house will not only take you back two hundred years over a leisurely two hour visit, with its knives, swords, guns, artifacts, polished wood furniture, changing exhibitions and Daguerro type photos will not only open the door to a era that was at the same time slower and simpler , but at the same time far more dangerous and unstable than today! Once done with your historic step into the past don't miss the stunning collection of necklaces, earrings, mementoes , and a variety of inexpensive keepsakes in the display case on the way out. Staff will be happy to give you information on upcoming exhibits, walks, and other events coming up. If you are looking for a genuine Mexican restaurant to for lunch try La Condesa on Adams street . Quiet relaxed atmosphere and they usually make at least one :"tipico" guisado and more than one soup just ask for it. Precios bajos y los duenos son gente educados y amables. The place is large. quiet, with large sofas, and comfortable benches with...

Alfonso was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming, he truly made the visit extra special. You can tell he loves what he does! Thank you, Alfonso, for bringing history to life!
We got the day pass (highly recommend!), which gave us access to all four museums. Each one offered something unique, and at one of them, we even got to see a presidential limo from the 1800s, such a cool surprise! A memorable and enriching stop all around. Don’t miss it if you’re in...
Read moreIt is a quaint little museum. I am Brownsville born and raised and surprisingly, I had never been. I had a realization of how little I knew about the history of my hometown. So during the Thanksgiving holiday break and during a visit to Brownsville, I decided to stop by and learn a little more about my city. I was a little disappointed with the little history that was provided in the museum. There are some great artifacts but the story telling needs an upgrade. Maybe a few more updates to the museum itself with allow more donors and more history...
