Mulberry Silks & Fine Fabrics is not only a beautiful fabric and notions store - it is my Happy Place!! I first found Mulberry Silks years ago as a knitter because they have a fabulous selection of buttons, zippers, ribbons, etc and at great prices. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and even encouraging with whatever project I bring in! Once I inherited a sewing machine, I put my name on the waiting list for a class to learn to use it. After a while (it is a long waitlist-but worth every SECOND of the wait!) I moved up to a spot in one of their evening classes and my life has been forever changed for the better (seriously, it is my Happy Place!)!! There is a negative review listed here on google regarding the waitlist for their evening classes - but the classes are small (just 6 people) so that you get lots of attention and help on whatever project you are working on (all students choose their own project, so it is no small feat for Susan or Liz to keep track of all their student’s projects!). Once you have secured your spot in the evening classes, you are likely to stay in them (as I said before, they are worth every second of a long wait!) because Susan and Liz are AMAZING, patient, kind, and supportive teachers. However, Mulberry does have other classes on Friday and Saturdays that one can enroll in on a first come, first serve basis as well as pop-up classes that are e-mailed out to the listserv of all those who are interested. Even if you don’t enroll in a class, they have the BEST selection of fabrics!! Especially those for making your own garments. They also carry notions and other small equipment along with patterns, books, magazines and plenty of other things you might need (or want!) for sewing! If they don’t have what you are looking for, all the employees have lots of knowledge of sewing and are more than willing to point you in the right direction. I love visiting their store even when I’m not in class! They get in new fabrics all the time so it’s great to go in and see what’s new so that you can start dreaming on your...
Read moreThis fabric shop is fantastic! The owners are incredibly community minded, welcome everyone no matter your experience in sewing, and build a sense of community that makes you feel at home. During the pandemic they’ve been creative and responsive, taking orders at off hours and in unique formats (IG DM anyone?), answering questions, finding and sending the perfect button options, and smiling through all the new layers of what it means to take care of customers in our current context. They’ve instituted a no shop policy out of deference to those of us who are immune sensitive which speaks volumes of their care and concern for their customers. They also sell the most scrumptious fabrics and know their products in and out, offering pattern pairing advice, adaptations for your specific fit interests and will even special order what you need if they don’t have it at the minute - it’s personal shopping plus! The weekly Saturday pop up shop flyer has literally been the highlight of my weeks throughout 2020 and I cant do without it! It’s been my mental health boost regularly. If you love fabric, sewing, or just good hearted people, make a visit when this is over, AND in the meantime get on the pop up shop distribution list. You...
Read moreUnfortunately, have to agree with the previous reviews. I am a college student and enjoy sewing/embroidery/just love fabric. I don't attend UNC but was here for the summer and was delighted to find what seemed to be a specialty fabric boutique. The first time I came, I took my time perusing all of the bolts, ribbons, tassels, etc. and enjoying just seeing what they had to offer. However, I was not greeted upon entering the store and when I asked about several different fabrics, the sales lady gave me short, condescending answers that seemed like she thought I wouldn't buy anything or didn't know anything. I did buy something in the end, but their attitude towards me still improved only marginally. The second time I came with a friend with a completely empty cup of coffee, which I was asked to throw away (apparently it was dangerous), and was not approached for help or otherwise afterward. It feels like a burden to be in their store.
While Mulberry does have nice fabrics (they do carry some designer names as well--Vera Wang, Calvin Klein, etc), I will only go back if I absolutely need to because they are the closest fabric store to me in Chapel Hill, but I don't recommend this place if you want to be treated like a...
