I recently visited Mohar Indian Clothing Boutique in Virginia and left thoroughly disappointed. The boutique significantly upcharges on regular Indian outfits, which are bought for much less from India, misleading customers expecting fair pricing.

The salespeople were excessively insistent, making the shopping experience uncomfortable by following me around the store, which felt more intrusive than helpful. A particularly frustrating policy was being allowed to try on only two outfits, severely limiting my shopping decisions. Moreover, they demanded I leave my phone at the desk before entering the changing rooms, a policy that felt invasive and disrespectful of my privacy.

I purchased a cute outfit from their clearance section for my daughter, but the inconsistent pricing made me suspect it might have been previously worn or of subpar quality. Despite the long drive from Gaithersburg, MD, the service worsened as the 8:00 PM closing time approached, with the staff rushing us and showing little interest in helping or making a sale.

Adding to the frustration, although I am a size 6, suitable for small to medium in Desi wear, the salesperson kept insisting I try on much larger sizes. This not only questioned my judgment but made the experience all the more disappointing. I am an Indian bride and I worked with Mohar by Ekaa Couture to custom design and make all of my bridal outfits. Each of my bridal lehengas was gorgeous, unique, and made with extremely high quality. The owner worked with me patiently over several sessions to finalize my outfits order. She made many of the design suggestions, including colors, blouse styles, and embroidery. My bridal outfits were delivered with plenty of time to spare and were made nearly perfectly to my measurements upon first trial. Only minor alterations were needed, all of which the Mohar team took care of quickly and seamlessly.

In addition to my bridal outfits, Mohar by Ekaa Couture also made matching outfits for the groom (my now husband). He is still receiving compliments on one of his outfits months later! We looked well coordinated and it was so easy to have our outfits made to match from the same designer.

Lastly, I also had my matching bridesmaids’ lehengas custom-made from Mohar by EC, based off measurements that my bridesmaids took themselves; the outfits turned out beautifully.

From off-the-rack options to the most custom, heavy outfits, Mohar by Ekaa Couture is the place to go. The design process was easy and the results were stunning. My experience with this place was pretty horrible. I worked w them for my custom outfits for my wedding. The first outfit I got was beautiful but the 2nd outfit was delivered to me less than a week away from my wedding, and it looked nothing like what I had ordered. The owner lady took little to no responsibility for her mistake and was not willing to give me the full refund.

She showed up on time once when I first met her and after that, every single time we were supposed to meet, she showed up 20 to 30 minutes late or was a no show for which she never apologized. She once asked me to come stop by her shop for the 2nd outfit so I left my work in hurry to head to her shop (45 mins drive) then I get a call when I am 10 minutes away from her shop that she has to cancel our appointment because she’s having car trouble. That’s when I was beyond frustrated and had a breakdown because I was less than a week away from my wedding and didn’t have my outfit ready. I realize that this person does not care about any of this and there’s nothing I could do about it.

I regretted ever picking this place for my outfits as they had me extremely anxious and stressed out so close to my wedding. I would highly discourage brides to rethink picking them for custom outfits. I really don’t want anyone to go through what I went through with them because it could’ve...
