The “Polish Cathedral” of Cicero St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church (of Our Lady of Czestochowa and Charity Parish) Cicero, IL -Named after the image of the Black Madonna credited for saving Poland, kept at the shrine of Jasna Gora in Poland. -Founded in 1895 for Polish immigrants, now serving both Polish Americans and Latino Americans -Mass celebrated in English, Polish, and Spanish -Since 2003 the church has been served by Polish Redemptorists. -Designed in the Gothic style and considered one of the Archdiocese’s many “Polish cathedral style” churches -Completed in 1918 by Worthmann & Steinbach -Carrara marble work comes from Italy including the altarpiece, with marble depictions of Saint Aloysius, Saint Hewig (or Saint Ludmila?), the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph -Ashrine dedicated to the Madonna of Czestochowa, who is seen in the marble altar piece, as well as in statuary outside the church -There are several devotional pieces throughout the church, including the Little Flower, Saint Francis, Divine Mercy, Our Lady of the Rosary with Saints Dominic and Catherine, Infant Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. John Paul II. -Stations of the Cross and stained glass lines the nave and transepts, depicting the life of Jesus and of Mary. -School was originally served by Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis. The school closed in 2009. In 2022, St. Mary of Czestochowa merged with nearby Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church to form one parish, now called Our Lady of Czestochowa and Charity Parish. Both sites still offer Mass, and Our Lady of Charity hosts the school.
