I think the problem with a lot of these reviews are that they are written by people who mention almost solely the NY Times rape victim article; which definitely requires attention, of course, but not many of these people seem to have attended this school or mention its numerous other merits. This school sits on a beautiful campus with a lake (used not only for swimming and sailing, but also for scientific class field trips), is amazingly (and even I'll admit surprisingly) diverse, and has some of the most dedicated and supportive professors. I was nervous after reading a lot of these reviews when I originally went to this college, as 1. a small white girl, 2. shy vegetarian with multiple tattoos, and 3. a double major in Environmental Science and Asian Studies, but I never should've doubted HWS. I have met amazing people, some of whom have overcome horrible pasts and obstacles, and others who have never been exposed to such tragedies. No matter their pasts or differences, they find themselves on common ground with similar passion for their studies, and most importantly, their knowledge of their impact on the future/each other. Basically what I'm trying to say is that to anyone feeling anxious about this school. or judging it solely by their recent NY Times coverage, think twice. This school is one of the most community services/charity orientated I've ever seen, full of people from inner cities and Cape Cod beach-houses, all of whom support not only one another, but also their passions...
Read moreOne of the many great things about Hobart is its laser beam focus on teaching critical thinking; something none of the reviewers giving one star seem to have in any abundance. I went to Hobart in the 80s and I can attest that this is a very tight nit school where people care deeply about everyone's well being. The whole purpose behind having a coordinate college system with separate woman and men's colleges is to ensure a separate strong voice for woman's issues and concerns. There are numerous organizations that provide resources to woman if something as tragic as this occurs.
But read the article again folks. What the State's Attorney said is that there is nothing to prosecute, meaning that, in his expert opinion with all the facts you don't have, there was no crime. A horrible embarrassing tragedy, yes. Poorly handled from a public relations perspective, yes. But please think for a moment. That bit about a winning football program blinding the administration to justice? Really? I know you've never seen Hobart on TV, because there is no TV contract. The stadium is smaller than many high school stadiums. Hobart is a very small division three school - so, no big money and no profit motive. I have two daughters and I hope they will get into the William Smith classes of '25 and '26 because I know what a great education it provides and what a caring...
Read moreOur son is a current student at HWS and has just finished his freshman year. HE LOVES IT! The faculty are highly supportive and engaged with the students. The style of education is not only highly academic, but also requires students to collaborate on projects both within the classroom environment and with the community of Geneva, NY, thus mimicking real job market skills. HWS has a guaranteed internship program that includes a stipend for any student who finds an unpaid internship, because they feel so strongly about gaining work experience and do not want students to have to reject offers simply because they need an internship that generates an income. Our son says that the party scene is mostly confined to the weekend and that fraternities are not the major source for socializing, rather the teams and social clubs which form a more responsible social bond. HWS is suitable for students who wish to be involved. The president of HWS was the former head of the Peace Corp under Clinton. The college reflects his tremendous guidance. I'm just disappointed that the NYT decided to embellish a sad story that is far to common on campuses across...
