I have nothing bad to say about this building however I have experienced racial discrimination by the security at this building in several occasions. I’m a member with WeWork and I have an office in this building. It’s always subtle annoyances like when I access the building, go up to the WeWork floor and find a seat, all of a sudden security just so happens to walk by for a random security check. The first time I felt racially discriminated against was when simply sitting in the lobby area. A guard comes up to me and asks if I’m waiting for someone and I’m like what? I have an office here and you guys have seen me come in and out several times. Ever since then I haven’t sat down in the lobby area due to the possibility of harassment by security. Most recently yesterday they sent two security guards up to walk past where I was sitting in WeWork and I had to address it in the moment. I asked them what the issue is and they pretend like it’s nothing. I told them their presence in this moment seems targeted towards me and is making me uncomfortable. The old guy I spoke with that was balding and wore glasses was very dismissive about me expressing my discomfort and basically told me that if I complained nothing would happen and it would be written off as him just doing his job. I could describe the physical appearance of the security woman that was there as well but I will wait until the next time security decides to judge me based on my appearance. I went to WeWork staff to let them know what happened and they are the ones that told me someone had slept in the stairwell over the weekend which confirms my suspicion that they were judging me to have been that person simply because that person was also tall and a person of color. After confirmation I immediately went and addressed the security woman about it and received an apology. I told her I don’t want that to ever happen to me again. I went to the security office in the basement next. I did get more empathy from them and was told that the old balding guy with glasses would be addressed about the way he responded to me in that situation. In order to combat harassment that to me feels like being followed by security in a nice retail store because of my race and/or appearance, I could cancel my membership which would be like leaving the store without buying the luxury item I wanted but that would be like punishing myself. Instead I plan on documenting the behavior of security towards me at all times. I’m going to use the power of my phone to begin collecting video evidence of what I consider to be racial discrimination and harassment and will look to take further legal action if necessary. This is strike 2 for security towards me at this building so they get 2 stars and a documented warning on here to cut it out and stop treating me like I’m suspicious based not on my behavior but my appearance AND race. I wish you would think...
