As an older, returning student with little knowledge of computer applications, I would encourage you to stay far away from taking any class with Andrea Compton. Four of the four older (over 40 years old) students dropped her class because after the third week of class she refused to help us. I met with her and told her how I needed her help and that failure was not an option and she just told me "you need to learn this". This was my last semester and I really wanted to fifill my dream of receiving a degree that took me twenty-five years to attain. She didn't want to help so I requested a transfer to another professor. After getting the go-ahead from Lauren Dickens, the acting Dean of Business I was told that I had to meet with Nancy Graviett in order to transfer to another class. She was ill and missed the whole week. At the end of the week the counselor put me in a different class and I assumed all was well until the following Tuesday when I was asked to come meet with Nancy. Lauren and Nancy proceeded to scream and yell at me for twenty-five minutes because they said I went "behind their backs" to enroll in a different class. I tried to explain that I didn't mean to upset anyone I was just wanting to move forward and that's when Lauren said "I think you're lying". They both seemed to take it personal. They were screaming so loud that as I was leaving I had another professor stop me to apologize on their behalf. Nancy proceeded to drop me from my class on a Friday night and made me pay again for the class. Luckily I ended up with an AMAZING professor, Debbie Mulherin, who helped guide me all along the way and I ended up graduating with highest honors. I tried speaking with John Bookstaver, Vice President for Accedemic Affairs and Enrollment Managemebt, but he just told me that "the way Andrea Compton teaches is her prerogative" and that was that. I showed him emails that proved that I was being mistreated and it appeared that he couldn't be bothered. I felt that I should have received a refund of the second payment due to the fact that at first Andrea was actually teaching the class and then three weeks later she stopped. Had I known she was going to conduct herself like this I would have dropped the class right away and not had to pay twice for the same class in the same semester. I really tried my best to come to a better solution than a one star rating but none of the afore mentioned SCCC employees...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOh where do i begin... This school has been the death of me. This school gives you the run around. Financial aid/enrollment services black ladies are rude and unwilling to help you out. Came up one day to collect my book voucher for my scholarship that I had. Came up and the older black lady handled me. She obviously did not know what she was doing. She tells me that I am on suspension from my financial aid (mind you I have a scholarship, so nothing to do with financial aid) she tells me the only way I can take my Human bio class is if i pay out of pocket. (I needed the human bio class for Paramedic school) I go home and tell my dearest friend about this and we go back up there because we knew something was not right, and what the lady said did not make any sense what so ever! A different lady took care of us and she was really helpful. She tells me that oh it looks like your SCHOLARSHIP will pay for the class. As everything was happening the older black lady who handled me before was behind the desk and said not one word. You could see the look on her face, the type of "uh oh I messed up" type of face. Long story short i finished human bio as of today but if we never would have went back up to SCC that day I never would have taken the class based off of that lady told me!
Also before the incident I sent her an email asking for the balance of my scholarship etc, and she said everything was there and ready to go... then all of the above happened. I think her name is Dawana.... not sure. Be careful when dealing with staff at SCC, you need to be firm and assertive. Especially when you think something that they are saying...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI applied for an Academic Coach role with specialty in mathematics for the EXCELerator program. I am extremely qualified for the role and had a great, informative, and cordial experience during the actual interview sessions. The EXCELerator seems to be a wonderful program and hosts students in a state-of-the-art facility focused solely on student growth and success.
However, the hiring manager and director of the EXCELerator, while quite pleasant during the actual interviews and reaching out initially, does not respond when I initiate communication. I had reached out to the director between the first and second interviews and received no reply. The director finally reached out to me, on his own terms, about the second interview several weeks later. Furthermore, after the second interview, I was informed that he and his team would be in touch about next steps, but after over two weeks of waiting, I have not received any communication regarding my candidacy. I can only assume another candidate was selected. I followed up to thank him and his team for their time and consideration and to express my interest in keeping in touch for future opportunities with the college and the EXCELerator, in particular. I have received no reply to this, either. Considering clear and prompt communication was an axis on which I was evaluated during the interview process, I believe this is very unprofessional and reflects poorly on the EXCELerator as well as the college more broadly. I urge the college to make an effort to ensure candidates-for-hire are kept in proper communication...
