Kapow! Comics & Games — Local services in Cumming

There was a comic series coming out that I wanted. Weeks in advance I spoke with the owner about getting me one of each issue in the new series. I signed up for the website his employees referred me to in order to list the issues I wanted pulled. I followed up with the manager 4 additional times in regards to the new series and was assured each time it would be done. I was told I was one of 3 people who wanted each issue in the series. When series came out, my issues were not pulled and he was out of most of what I wanted. When I inquired about why he did not pull the issues like we discussed, multiple times, the owner got upset and told me he would gladly cancel my subscriptions and I could go purchase somewhere else. I am a paying customer who has spent hundreds of dollars at his store. I have bought every variant comic he has offered. I have never not purchased anything I asked him to pull for me. I ask a question about something I had followed up on repeatedly and I was told he did not need my business. I got a lecture about how he has to look out for himself and he will not get stuck with any overhead. I was told I should have put in the request 3 months earlier. Why he did not mention that ANY of the times I came in to verify my order before it was released I do not know. I do know that I spent too much time and money at his store to be thrown out just by asking a question. I have a mixed first impression on Kapow. I used to play at Galactic Quest when Naruto was still a big thing, and when it died out I took a long break from hobby gaming. My time at Galactic Quest was exceptionally fun. The people running the two store locations were helpful and friendly, and more importantly they made sure the players and regulars were welcoming towards new faces as well.

It's here that my experience at Kapow fell flat. I'm not an extrovert (but not a hermit either), and while the store certainly had reasonably priced merchandise, my wanting to get involved with some games felt... awkward. I didn't know anyone and nobody seemed interested in getting to know me. There were no attempts to engage me in conversation. Nobody asked if I wanted to play anything. The Magic players behaved like they were in some sort of high school clique and I was an outsider. The DnD players were mostly younger kids, while not a bad thing, I am a bit older. Whoever answered the phone when I had questions about what games were played and when throughout the week sounded rather perturbed.

So from a storefront standpoint, Kapow is great! But at least for a shy new face, in my experience, it ultimately falls on the shoulders of the players themselves to make someone feel welcome and wanted. I was most welcomed by the 40k players, even after they knew I had no interest in 40k.

I go to school at UGA but this shop is in my hometown. The comic shop I normally go to in Watkinsville had sold out of a special that I wanted, as did the other comics shops in the Athens area. I called Kapow to see if they had any because I was coming home for holiday break the next day. They had the issue in stock and I asked them to pull one for me. My mom decided to do me a favor and pick it up for me that day so I wouldn't have to go get it the next day after driving home. When she got there they hadn't pulled the issue for me because "they felt like they had enough". I have never felt so disregarded by an employee at a comic shop. I was blatantly lied to on the phone and will never be shopping here again. This store needs to learn customer service.

Update: If I could go lower than 1 star I would. The owner of the store tracked me down on Facebook to send me a message regarding my 1 star review. Instead of apologizing for my experience he lied to me again about the comic being pulled and told me to change my review because I put jobs at risk when I give low reviews. I responded to the message to call out the fact that I was being lied to again and the owner proceeded to call me an entitled kid and basically told me that any issue that happened was my fault. Luckily I was only in the area visiting because if this was my only option to be my regular shop I would stop...
