As I am next in line to be checked out by the 3 open cashiers. the manager (I assume- he was in a suit and tie) started waving his hand for me to come forward in line. I move up a little, but was confused, as there were no open registers yet. (There are 2 open on the left side, then 1 open on the other side- the right side) I move up a little, but stop and continue to wait for the other ladies to finish checking out. The manager then starts, condescendingly, being like āYou need to commit to a sideā ⦠Iām clearly in line for the 2 registers on the left, waiting for the next one to open up. I said āIām waiting for the next cashier to open up,ā and he responds with āWell, we like our customers to commit to a side so the line isnāt so far back.ā Iām literally right next the lady checking out in front of me at this point. I then say āI think itās pretty clear which side Iām onā to which he stopped responding. Exactly, shut up. This manager needs to go back to training. No associate needs to be policing a checkout line like that on a random, slow Thursday. There was probably 3 parties behind me in line by the way, he did not need to be policing the checkout line like that, and if he needed the line to move up (which Iām spatially aware enough to know how close I need to get up to the front of the line) he needs to be trained on how to communicate with customers in order to achieve his goal. L Even the lady behind me said āHurry up and get there!ā when the next cashier opened up, making light of the strict line police LOL! Not only did he make me uncomfortable but others in line. Here, Iāll train you for a sec since Iāve been in hospitality for 10+ years. It should've gone like this:
The manager should already be paying attention to the upcoming cashiers that are about to be open and start diving the line to create a flowing system. āHi maāam, Can I (I statements, not YOU statements. You should always say āCan I have you..ā not āCan youā) have you move to this side towards this cashier, she will get you ringed up in a moment. To the other Ladies and Gentleman in line, we have another open register on this other side to the right (to which the manager would then point out to the 2nd or 3rd person behind me), āIf of you would want to start a line over there? We have 2 lines already on this side (pointing out the 2 open on the left) and 1 line open over there if yāall want to scoot up and get in a spot!ā All while saying it with a smile on your face. If you are going to police the checkout line, then it needs to be done actively by the manager. Not just assuming your customers know the ins and outs of the Hobby Lobby checkout line techniques. Additionally, when a customer isnāt reading your mind, the last thing you need to do is have belittling language that is not only inappropriate coming from a manager, but inappropriate to be said in front of other customers. Saying āWe like our customers to commit to a side and stick to itā is implying to the consumer that:
Quite rude. Quite clueless. No one knows what's going on... it shouldn't take four people to do a return, only to be met with raised eyebrows and snarky side eye. I was told during my purchase you could return without a receipt, and then when I attempted to do so they acted like I was trying to return a baby to the hospital. Would never shop here but now it's the only place in this zip code to buy only one yard of fabric cut from a bolt. Not much...
