I hired DSM Salon & Spa for wedding hair and makeup for myself, my bridesmaids, and moms for my wedding. I would like to start by saying that Kasey. who did my bridal hair, was AMAZING. At my trial and on my wedding day she made sure my hair looked beautiful and exactly how I wanted it. However, the rest of the experience was terrible. The salon makes you pay a fee for a concierge if your wedding party has more than 5 receiving services (this is before you pay for the services or travel fees), but this does not mean you get extra help. I was upfront about how many people would need hair and makeup and when we could start but kept having to add stylists and add hours in the last couple months before the wedding, making budgeting a challenge. I was told trial booking wouldn't be a problem and then couldn't get in without coming twice until less than two weeks before the wedding, which conveniently was after it was too late to back out. I didn't get to see my makeup trial at all until it was finished, and the stylist went home for the day even though I didn't like it. My eyes were shadowed black and my face was in foundation about two shades too light. I ended up having to pay the salon for makeup they didn't do on my wedding day and pay a different salon to come in to do my makeup because I was told they couldn't do the makeup I wanted. I wanted standard bridal makeup that looked similar to the portfolio photos they showed me when booking. On the wedding day, one bridesmaid had to wipe her face completely and have another bridesmaid do it and another told the stylist to stop partway through, and she finished it herself later. Hairstyles were inconsistent depending on which stylist did it. Their prices are too high for this type of service, and it was disappointing that stylists were unable to adapt to feedback given to them while the services were given. Our bridal party went here to have hair and makeup done. The ladies that worked with us were very nice, but overall the hair updo was sadly lacking. Myself and the other bridesmaids picked a style from their instagram portfolio and what we got was not worth what we paid. The other two had shoulder length, finer hair while mine was middle of my back and thick. The stylist and I had a good conversation about what would work for my hair and she stated the reference photo would be no problem, but she would need to "tweak it to make it work". An hour later I had an updo that looked nothing like what we had talked about and it was falling out as I drove back to our hotel. By the time we reached our hotel it had completely fallen and had to be re done by the stylist working on the bride's hair. It would have been considerate to at least talk to me about giving me a completely different hair style or simply stating she couldn't make it work. I would have been happy to try something simpler like a half up style instead of the full updo. Similar issue happened with one of the other bridesmaids and her hair was much finer and shorter than mine. I'm glad we had another stylist at the hotel to help troubleshoot as these updos were not worth the money. Needless to say, it was not a good experience and I would not recommend them. I worked with DSM Salon for my wedding day and through the whole process Britney was extremely responsive, patient, and super helpful. As I no longer live in the Des Moines area, I hadn’t ever been to the salon until the day of my trial. The salon was super cute and all of the stylist were friendly! Kelsey crushed my trial look and it was exactly like the photos… yet I realized the style just didn’t suit me. As you can imagine on the day of my wedding I was slightly nervous because we were going to try a new look, you guys… it was truly STUNNING. I felt so beautiful and the style suited me far better.
