I moved into Berkeley Landing Apartments in August, and my experience has been nothing but frustrating.
First, let’s talk about move-in day. I have email receipts proving that, after driving six hours from another state, I was told that the apartment I signed a lease for was not available. Yes, the unit I had already signed a lease for was suddenly unavailable on the day I moved in. Someone else was still living in it and would be there for another two weeks.
With no warning, we were forced to choose between two other units, sign a new lease on the spot, and pay higher rent for a unit with one less bedroom. After traveling all that way, we had no other choice but to sign. I initially overlooked this issue, thinking it was a one-time inconvenience, but if I had known what was yet to come, I would have never signed a lease here.
Once I moved in, I realized some electrical outlets didn’t work. I reported it, but nothing was fixed. Then I went on a three-week vacation and came back to find that all the food in my fridge had spoiled because the refrigerator outlet had stopped working. Maintenance came to fix it, but it stopped working again the next day. The outlet randomly turns on and off, meaning my food kept going bad. This happened multiple times, forcing me to throw away groceries I spent money on. Instead of dealing with more ignored maintenance requests, I had to run an extension cord across my kitchen just to keep my fridge working.
Then came the biggest issue, the automated rent payment system. I was signed up for autopay, so my rent should have been taken out automatically. One month, it wasn’t. Instead of calling me about it, they sent an email on the same day rent was due and expected me to catch it in time. Since I never saw the email, I got a notice on my door saying I had seven days to pay or be evicted.
I called the office, and they admitted it was their system’s fault, yet I was still charged a late fee of over $200. The funny thing is, they had no problem charging me extra for missing one email, but when I emailed them about the issue, they never replied.
The only time they care about you is when you’re trying to move in. If you’re a potential resident, they’ll answer every call, reply to every email, and do whatever it takes to get you in. But once you sign the lease, you’re no longer a priority. At that point, they ignore your issues, neglect maintenance, and focus on trapping the next tenant.
Even when I called about my rent issue, they always when they want, but the property manager was never there. I was promised call backs that never happened, and eventually, they just started sending my number straight to voicemail. I truly believe they wrote my number down just to avoid me.
At the end of the day, I can’t wait for my lease to end so I can move out of this place. You’ll be charged for services they don’t provide, ignored when you need help, and stuck dealing with problems that never get fixed. If you’re thinking about moving here, do yourself a favor—DON’T. I decided to exclude other problems that are mentioned in...
Read moreThe office staff is much improved since they got new owners. I feel at ease now talking to someone there. Im very happy about that. Things like mosquitos have gotten better and less bugs inside. The pool has not been closed since it opened which is nice because last year it was only open during office hours. I would love to see a playground built where the tennis court is however. Its an eye sore and besides the street there isnt anywhere kids can play. Thank you for the improvements.
This is my old review. I couldn't leave a new one. Lets start with the mold in my bathroom they came and "treated" it twice with "bleach" and the mold never went away. The tiles behind the toilet fell off and the maintenance guy stuck his hand under the wall and said "yep no moisture". My AC has not worked since september. I have called a ton of times and tony the maintenance manager told me to open a window because it more energy efficient. Im not kidding. I just called a new maintenance guy out (they cant seem to keep much staff around) and i demanded my ac be fixed BECAUSE IT IS NINETY DEGREES IN MY HOUSE and he told me its wet and he wouldnt fix it. I told him to put gloves on and he informed me my ac was MISSING PIECES which the maintenance manager never told me before. He litterly ran out of my house screaming at me. I would also like everyone to know that there have been seven or eight different maintenance men here since we've lived here (about a year and a half). On to stacy... She refused to work with me on scheduling. We have a dog and they cannot enter my apartment without us here. She told me they didnt make appointments and we would have to do it on their schedule. I had to start getting nasty with her avout the mold because i have a three year old son who has been getting sick since we found the mold and my wall has been left open. My husband went to talk to them about some of the problems and she started gossiping about me flipping out on her and told him I flipped out over the dog. I flipped out over the mold and their response (or lack of) to the mold. I love the area and the apartment is old but it fits our needs. My fridge had mold in it and in the water line and Stacy told them she wouldnt replace it til i took pictures and threatened to call the health department then wanted to give me a used one from another apartment and only got a new one because the old maintenance guy had ordered new ones the old was orginal to the apartment which was built in the 70s. Stacy has given me problem after problem and i cannot wait to get out of here. We stayed another year because they were changing management. I have called the management company twice to address issues since i get nothing solved with the office with no responce....
Read moreI moved into this apartment in June of last year. In short, it should have been illegal to give me the apartment they gave me. Over the course of one year, I had to deal with literally thousands of bugs. I have countless pictures and videos of the disgusting conditions; I promise this isn't an exaggeration. I suspect my issues may have been worse than others because it was a terrace level apartment, so steer clear of those at all costs. I had to resort to using my own bug traps all year to keep things somewhat livable. It is particularly annoying because on the day I moved in, the apartment was full of at least a hundred dead bugs scattered throughout. The leasing office apologized and helped broom it out for a bit, but that was it. No concerns or red flags whatsoever about the fact that it was in that shape to begin with, so they have to have known it was bug infested. Even when moving out just a couple weeks ago, I hired professional cleaners to make it spotless (apartment entirely empty, no food or anything). I went in the next day to double check things and there were already two dead roaches plus at least 10 other dead bugs all over the main living room floor. I refuse to believe the complex was unaware of this apartment being this way. They HAVE to have seen the conditions while doing regular maintenance / getting it ready for the next person to move in.
Unrelated to the bug issue, I was also nearly evicted with no warning many months ago. I was sick during the week this happened so I wasn't leaving the apartment, but luckily went outside to grab a package and saw a red notice on my door. Had I not happened to see this notice, I wouldn't have been able to call them in time to figure out what was going on. It turns out the leasing office misplaced an entire check which was later found by them, and one of the apartment accountants apologized to me on their behalf. I don't understand how I wasn't called or emailed with a warning or any sort of heads up when an eviction notice was placed on my door.
The only reason I'm giving this apartment two stars is because the maintenance team was always very quick to respond to tickets and very kind every time. I really...
