Read moreZThe Big Elk Shopping Center has been at it's present location for a number of years though I can't give an exact history or say what businesses have come and gone over that time. Presently, the establishments, to the best of my recollection, are as follows: 1)Acme Markets, 2) Pet Smart, 3)Dollar Tree, 4)T-Mobile phone store, 5)Hair Cuttery, 5)Bed and Bath, 6)a loan office whose name I don't recall, 7) Payless Shoe Source, 8) Peebles which is a store for women's clothing, fashion accessories, cosmetics, etc., 9) GNC (General Nutrition Centers), 10) Olympia Sports, and 11) Planet Fitness indoor gym. Recently, within the past few months, a K-Mart, which had been located at the opposite end of the center ever since it opened, closed for good but it was never that good a store. Along with these businesses and closer to Rt. 40 ( Pulaski Hwy.) is a PNC Bank branch, a McDonald's, a Sonic, and a Dunkin' Donuts. This is about as much as I can tell anyone about it. There are some businesses, that I frequent, such as the Acme, Dollar Tree, Hair Cuttery, Payless Shoes, and Olympia Sports, and McDonalds and others for which I have no need. I can't say much else about it other than what I have; it's a shopping center much like any...

Speed bumps are a nuisance and probably not good for my car's suspension and exiting onto Bridge Street is one way to downtown Elkton or try to cross into a parking lot and make a U-turn back to Route 40.
Acme and Peebles remain anchor stores and there are specialized shops such as Dollar, Hallmark, GNC and fitness centers. Also, Duncan Donuts, Popeye's and Subway have shops in the mall area and there is access to McDonald's and Sonic. PNC bank has a branch that includes a drive through at the west end and there is an M&T branch in the Acme, as well as, Sav-On pharmacy.
There is ongoing construction but no posting as to how the space will be used. The buildings left empty by Social Security Administration and Comcast should be desirable locations with a minimum of speed bumps and away from the panhandling. There is a signal protected entrance in that area and easy access back to 40.
The mall has seen better times but is accessible from busy Route 40 and will continue growing even in these...
