My husband and I shopped at Belk yesterday and were deeply disappointed by the unprofessional and uncomfortable atmosphere created by the management style in this store. Throughout our visit, a loud male voice (we later learned it was a manager named George) came over the radios carried by the associates, berating them about credit card percentages and sales metrics. His tone was abrasive and disruptive, not only for the staff but also for us as customers.
While I was in the dressing room and my husband waited outside, we couldn’t escape George’s constant commentary, calling out associates by name and criticizing their performance. One associate, trying to resolve a transaction issue, repeatedly sought help, only to be met with dismissive and condescending remarks over the radio. It was clear she wasn’t receiving proper guidance or support.
At checkout, the situation worsened. My husband inquired about potential coupons on his account, and while the associate kindly checked for him, George approached, dressed casually in camo, and interjected rudely. Without addressing us directly, he loudly warned the associate not to assist with coupons via her phone, threatening her job and leaving her visibly upset. He stated loudly, "they are watching the cameras, and if they see you doing that you'll be fired." He continued, "everyone has a phone and an app, they can do it themselves." This unprofessional interaction left us both uncomfortable and concerned for the associate.
This experience stands in stark contrast to our recent shopping trip at the Charlotte flagship store, where the professionalism, customer service, and store organization reflected the high standards we associate with Belk. The difference between the two stores is night and day.
As longtime customers who have spent thousands of dollars with Belk, especially during this holiday season, we strongly believe that this location’s issues go beyond metrics or sales percentages. The loud, public shaming of staff, lack of proper training, and toxic work environment not only create a poor shopping experience but also harm employee morale, factors that undoubtedly affect customer retention and revenue.
This store is not representative of the Belk brand we know and appreciate. Corporate should seriously consider addressing these management and operational issues as part of any strategy to improve performance, rather than solely focusing on sales metrics. I was in there to inquire as to why an order had not been shipped even though it said that it was shipped and had a tracking number, the post office was never given the parcel. The young man at the service desk acted like he did not want to look up the order even though I gave him the order number. He then called a manger. What showed up is not what I would call a manager. I explained to him what was going on and since the order had not shipped, to go ahead and cancel the order and credit back my account. He said he could not do it, even though another manager told me on Wednesday to wait another day an come back in and they would cancel it. He claimed I would have to call customer service. When I asked him for the number, he claimed he could not give it to me. I then asked him for the number for the corporate office, and he claimed he could not give me that number either. When I asked him if he could do anything besides stand there, he just gave me a blank stare. This clown's name is George. He claimed he was the sales manager. I asked for the store manager, George said with much glee that he was the highest manager in the store today! Well, if that is the case, Belks is in major trouble. No wonder the store help is sorry. they learn it from the managers. The only reason I had to order online is because as usual, this store never has anything in stock. Well George old buddy, I did find a number for the corporate office and I did file a customer complaint against you. I hope they fire your sorry self before you run off any other customers. You sir are an idiot and if you worked for me, I would have fired you on the spot! Now I have to wait another seven days to see if Belks will get off their dead butts and ship my item before I can cancel it and get my money back. This is not the Belks I remember from 50 years ago. Searched and searched none found asked 3 different employees for help only to be told none in store and actually can’t even get it online… I met a lady who warned me do not order they will mess it up they always do…. So, that being said I was like ok… headed to the make up counter to buy some Clinique face wash it’s all I can use on my skin. They had a sale so I bought a huge $50 something bottle and also about $$50 somethings in moisturizer to get the clinic make up deals two then free products something, my Mom was with me and bought her some products for free deals too). Sales lady said items will be shipped to me on Tuesday I would have by like 2 days later..,. My Moms Clinique products were delivered over a week ago. So I called this store Belks in Evans, GA repeatedly to even get someone to help me. Eternal hold and no help. They tell me wait a few days.. then they tell me my purchase is marked as picked up so come get it. so,I drove 40 minutes back to the store to be told no it’s out for delivery give it 3 more days. I said that’s not what you said on the phone. Oh we didn’t know you would drive over here ! Really people if I spent over $ 100 on products and I want them. They would not give me any products and could not even show proof that they shipped it. I asked for my money back because the purchased has cleared my bank and I have my receipt in had and they refused to give my money back. So, over a week has passed I have not received my merchandise I paid for and I can’t even get a refund. Belk store needs my money more than I do. They over nothing to compensate me for their errors.
