My time at Wright State has certainly not been what I was hoping it would be. While it is not completely terrible, there are a lot of reasons why I would go to another school if I had the chance to do it over again. My main gripe with Wright State is that the staff is so clueless. I never want to be a person to try and tell someone how to do their job but when thousands and thousands of people are investing so much money and time into a place you expect the staff to be equipped to handle simple tasks and questions. The communication with every department is awful. You would have better luck jumping off a bridge and not breaking a leg compared to getting a simple, TIMELY response from any department at Wright State. An issue with your financial aid? They'll make sure to tell you a few days before the start of the semester. Don't even get me started on the advisors. I don't know what it is but they seem to play musical chairs and just keep switching jobs. The worst part about it is they don't even have the courtesy to send out an e-mail to the students they advise that they are leaving. I have found out 3 times now that my advisor left due to me trying to get a hold of them, only to find out they fell off the face of the earth. I have had 5 different advisors and I can already tell you I am headed towards 6. Each program has a certain set of requirements, which includes which classes you should take to be on track. These papers with these requirements are very helpful and should be easily accessible. But guess what, they aren't. Out of the 3 advisors I had prior to finding this out, not one mentioned this or gave me a copy. It set me back a semester and now I have to wait an additional semester because my Senior class is only offered in the Spring semester. That is being optimistic. If I know Wright State as well as I think I do, I will have some other delays due to incompetency. You're looking at a class of 2057 graduate right here! I will give them some credit though, I actually enjoy the campus due to it being small. That is the main reason I chose to go to Wright State because that better fits my personality. I'm not sure what is going on with this school. It looked so promising in 2014 when they sold me. Now, they just seem to be in the news for the wrong reasons. Additionally, I can say the professors and fellow students there are awesome and that is about one of the few positives I have to say about Wright State. All in all, I would strongly consider other options if I were a prospective student considering Wright State. Sure, it is relatively cheap in terms of tuition and offers you a chance to save a ton of money by commuting. But to me, the trade-offs are simply not worth it. Do yourself a favor and bite the bullet and go to a bigger school. At least you will be getting better service, a competent staff, and a school that actually cares about you rather than just chewing you up and spitting you out. Don't end up like me, feeling as if I am walking the green mile every time I walk from the parking lot to my...
Read moreThis review is specifically for the Graduate School Office at WSU: I'd give a 4.2/5 for my undergrad there, but man does the Grad School suck... I have NEVER heard of a compliment given to the office and have had several issues with them losing papers or checks when I worked at the Bursar. I seriously should have taken that as a sign of utter and complete incompetence. You would think for such a critically important aspect of a student's college career would be taken care of in a prudent and timely manner (especially since only 15% of the population are Grad). Where do I start? Well, it took them well over three months to get a Grad Research Assistantship contract for me, after we turned in EVERYTHING. They turned me away at an appointment once because I forgot to sign and date one paper and the lady "didn't have time to wait that day [20 extra seconds]" Once I was finally able to sign my GRA, after 3 runarounds, I asked very specific questions about it: Does it cover late fees, since you are the reason I had to wait to register. Does it cover insurance, legal fees, other fees? Will I have to pay for anything else? Well turns out it didn;t cover everything, I checked and saw everything go through fine and assumed it would stay that way. Well three months later and I have a hold on my Bach. Degree and cant register for grad classes because I didn't pay for misc fees and have accrued $200 in late fees... I am assuming this problem will not be fixed timely either since I contacted them three days ago and still have not responded to my message... Your grad studies will depend on your department, but rest assured, the university will run you around in circles to get the simplest of advice on...
Read moreNot a college for people already working full-time. In my time at Wright State I have yet to find an online class, or a class that is held after standard business hours. I'm sure they exist and they will comment on this post saying "Im sorry you have found classes inconvenient for your situation. We offer many online classes and hold classes in the evening." and while the letter of that statement may be true in reality it is not true, at least for the Computer Engineering/Science major.
Additionally prepare to spend 20 min trying to park. Im lucky enough my job lets me make up missed time in the evening so I can take 2 classes at a time. I leave work and try to be efficient as possible with my time to avoid having to stay at work making up time until 8 pm. But then so so so much time is wasted trying to find a parking spot. A quick search online will show this has been a problem for decades with no resolution, goes to show the schools commitment to helping their students.
But if your like me and a combination of location, and cost leaves you no option for a 4 year degree, welcome to Wright State!
If a 2 year degree is sufficient or you want a better place to take some classes and save ALOT of money, go to Clark State. I know, before going to Wright State I laughed at that statement too. Clark State is FAR superior to Wright State in all ways that matter, plus a lot of classes can transfer over for a 4...
