This Aldi is on my way home so I stop in at least 2-4 times each week. I feel I’ve been very patient as a customer with employees acting like I’m a disturbance if I sneak by their pallets or ask them a question. It doesn’t exactly make me feel good but honestly it’s a retail job and I don’t exactly expect 5 star service from anyone. But today made me feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, and unwelcome.
I walked in and saw some storage tubs I had been wanting to snag. I was torn on sizes so I got one of each and put the smaller one inside the other so I could continue shopping. Midway through I hadn’t picked anything up but took a bathroom break before grabbing anything frozen. I dropped the bins in the same place I always leave my merchandise and continued into the bathroom. Upon coming back to my items, an older man who was working the registers had picked up the bins and was leaning on them over the register conveyor. I said “oh sorry, I had to use the bathroom and put those there while I ran in” to which he looked me up and down and was quiet for a moment before saying “you put something inside of here”.
Now to me, it was a no brainer to condense while I shopped without a cart (forgot my quarter) so I didn’t take up too much of the aisles or smack someone as I turned and browsed. But I can understand why it would be something to mentally note for when I came up to pay.
He continued to keep his hands and arms over the top of the bins. I’m not sure if he actually thought I was trying to pull a fast one but he wouldn’t pass them over to me. So after a few more seconds I said “I know” and reached to take the bins back. He hesitated but allowed me to then take them. As I walked away to continue shopping, another worker came over and she asked him what he wanted. I didn’t hear what he said because he talked in such a low tone but he looked at me as he spoke, motioned in my direction and kept tabs on me for the remainder of my visit, which was maybe another 10 minutes.
Again, I understand that shoplifting is a huge problem, but the blatant assumption that i was about to steal something instead of addressing it IF i walked away without scanning something is really damaging. This place already has an unwelcoming atmosphere compared to other Aldis, now you’re making those who don’t take that to heart feel like criminals. I think I’d rather pay the extra money for Publix or Sprouts. Those places actually respect their customers and don’t assume before actions have taken place to solidify a theft or anything like that.
Unfortunately I don’t think speaking to management would have helped, as it has not been a positive experience...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. This was hands down the worst experience I’ve had at a store. The only saving grace was the manager lady—she was fantastic, professional, and actually helpful. As for Adam, the cashier… he was awful. I don’t even know how he still has a job. He was rude, careless, and just downright disrespectful. He scanned everything so fast, missing half my order, and when I pointed out that an item wasn’t mine but belonged to the person behind me, he still ignored me and kept scanning it like I was invisible. I tried explaining again, and he just brushed me off, making it clear he couldn’t care less. The people behind me were so frustrated with him, they even complained as they walked out. How is this guy even working the register? Honestly, it was a horrible experience. The manager lady was the only one who seemed to have any sense of how to do her job. But Adam? He needs serious training in basic customer service, or better yet, he shouldn’t be working with customers at all. Will never come back as...
