They did an excellent job of mixing the modern, with all the historic pieces. You first walk into a store front, selling mostly photos and books, but also has some of the shirts and trinkets you may find at other stores thought the park. Once you walk through the store a bit, you will start to notice history lessons here or there about the store. They also have a detailed insert sheet to take home free, at the register, that talks in more detail about the building and the two brothers who built it. When you start to wall toward the back, you have access into a room with a huge antique projector reel. It points into the museum and theater room, and has a collection of photos in the room. You can then follow the staircase into the museum theater room where you can find painting on display, at your second floor level, along with a placard that tells you the artists and medium used. These paintings are absolutely breathtaking. There were a few I had to prove where actually created by hand vs. A computer printed image. Following the stairs to the floor level, there is a detailed museum about the Kolb brothers. I recommend going to the back corner with the family tree first, just to understand who is who in some of the descriptions of items.
The story of these two men, was actually very entertaining. They were the first to record the experience of traveling the Colorado river, on moving picture, and it plays in the background as you walk through the displays. Over all, I had a...
Read moreThe Kolb Studio is one of the historic landmark buildings which can be found on the edge of the South Rim in the Grand Canyon Village. This is where the locally famous Kolb brothers made their trade as photographers during the early 20th century.
This landmark was started in 1904 and expanded several times as Kolbs prospered and needed to expand their property. Today, you can visit the Kolb Studio and find a gift shop as well as a large exhibition room featuring artworks, artefacts and a bit of history about the brothers, their adventurous lives spent at the Grand Canyon.
We really enjoyed the present exhibition and would gladly return to view again during future trips to the Grand Canyon. This makes a nice place to visit for 20-30 minutes if you have interest in art and history.
Note: There are several other important historical landmarks nearby. You can combine your visit with the nearby Lookout Studio just a couple minutes further walk towards the Bright Angel Lodge, which is also worth stopping by...
