Awhile back I brought in a very tarnished sterling silver necklace and bracelet (and a few other pieces). They looked horrible. I asked if they could be saved by cleaning. I was too afraid to do it myself for fear of more damage. The woman there said she wasn’t certain, but she would do her best. I honestly didn’t expect to be charged because most of the jewelry stores I shop in will clean free of charge. She requested a deposit. She was rude, and snobby. I was shocked, but gave one. She needed days to clean them. After a few days I picked up the jewelry and paid a hefty fee (over $100) in addition to the deposit. These products were purchased from Tiffany’s, so I assumed they could look brand new again. She did not show me the jewelry, instead had it packaged up. I should have looked right then. The pieces looked WORSE then when I brought them in. I am not sure how a jeweler would not know how to clean sterling silver. I just bought cleaner from the Tiffany’s website and in ten minutes have them sparkling. I feel so taken advantage of. This is not a jeweler and I would not trust anything that comes out of this store. Go next door to Brown instead and...
Read moreMy partner and I recently visited R.D. Allen Freeport Jewelers after searching the web for authentic tourmaline jewelry. We scheduled an appointment as we were traveling from MA. We met with Annette Evans and explained that we wanted to create a special ring that would embrace our relationship. I had some photos of settings and described what we were looking for. We wanted a Celtic setting to represent his Irish heritage and I wanted a tourmaline stone to represent Maine where I grew up. We also wanted to be able to have an engraving. The picture below is the finished product. We are thrilled!!! The appraisal gives the history of the stone, describing how they obtained the rough stones from a mine in Maine. What the picture does not capture is the brilliance of this stone and the color changes in the light, it goes from almost an emerald green color to a beautiful sea foam green in bright sunlight. I cannot speak highly enough of the customer service provided. The store has many beautiful pieces and I highly recommend you stop by if you are in the area. Thanks again,...
Read moreOrdered a custom piece from these folks. After asking several times for an estimate, got numbers thrown at me in no particular order with no real conclusion. Put down what is a hefty deposit for me ($250+), after being told that the pieces would be "more or less" in that price range. Once the pieces arrived, I was told I owed another $180+ and when I went to pick them up, it was another $200+ ("oh, yeah, there's sales tax on part of the order, but not this part of the order, but yeah, there's tax on it." What?) Never offered a written estimate (and buyer beware, I'll never make the mistake of trusting a non-written one ever again). I brought the stones to the transaction and still the pieces cost more than what I would expect to pay for ones off the shelf. I'm tremendously sad I cannot use them any more, because I prefer to work with a small shop on several other custom pieces I...
