Rock of ages was once the best place to purchase music and have a knowledgeable staff that would recommend other artists or genres based what I was purchasing. In recent years, all the staff is gone. I understand with the internet, Itunes and the digital music revolution has put the demand for locally ran music stores like the Rock on the endangered species list. So I understand the decline in business since the net became the go to place for music is the reason I haven't had that type of experience in years.
What I don't understand is how an owner (or who I believe is the owner) and sole employee of Rock of Ages, acts almost inconvenienced and irritated anytime I have a question or simply is waiting to be cashed out. It isn't just me who has received this type of treatment, but friends have mentioned this to me when talking about ROA. This has happened at least 8 out of the past 10 visits and is not a one time occurrence. There are never more than a few people there at a time during my visits. So I don't understand why you wouldn't give better customer service, especially if it's YOUR business. Their prices are especially high compared to the same type of music stores in Dearborn, Ferndale and even Royal Oak. Charging 5-25% more than your local competitors for record or CD is just crazy to me! Especially when customer service is virtually non existent.
As a Garden City resident, Rock of Ages is just blocks away. I've given ROA more chances than most places I've become disillusioned with, by continuing to visit over the years in hopes things would change. I admit, a couple of my visits were extremely pleasant with no issues with anything including any I have listed in this review. But sadly, it never seems to last. It honestly saddens me when I have to drive to Dearborn or Royal Oak to buy music when The Rock is just around the corner. I hope that someone reads this and makes a conscious effort to improve the,...
Read moreI've gone here since 2001 for all music related needs and this was THE place to go before the internet made it easier to get small novelties and band merch. it's where I bought all of my hardcore metal core Hip hop and of course ICP music and memorabilia and concert tickets. They also sell loads of really good vinyl and the selection of music and novelties is only compared to the internet. I tried to find Chelsea Cutlers latest album but to no avail. She must not be that big yet but I haven't requested it either. I will add if you do ask the owner he will check his catalog and try to get you whatever you want that he didn't order yet. The musical gold from my childhood is still there and they have a vast used CD selection compared to seeing crates upon crates of vinyl in the 80s. If it's anything rock metal nu metal hardcore death metal you're going to find it here. There's even a vast selection of novelty tobacco pipes and window decals posters and clothing tucked in the back. If your Into vintage play it and pent mags they've got those to pick through too. It's a fun place to poke around with a friend n discover music you may have forgotten. I recently picked up a copy of as I lay dyings second LP and Mac Miller's movies with the sound off. even the selection of body jewelry is internet comparable. Go there shop there you'll be happy with every single visit. Support local small business check with them before you check the internet for musical obscurities. They got copies of ICP the terror wheel on vinyl. yes vinyl and it sounds amazing. If I go next time n see run the jewels albums on vinyl I officially will go...
Read moreNice, friendly staff. Cozy space. They have a ton of merch. Shirts, hoodie, patches, pins and more. Also the have music in a variety of mediums. Both audio and video. If you still have a VCR, the even have VHS tapes.
I went in looking for something pretty rare (an out of print vinyl record) and browsed the store for a while before asking for help. I was asked before but I declined. Wanted the see the store as this was my first visit. Great selection of used and new vinyl, all at respectable prices. Walked around the back and there are tons of apparel. Hoodies, pullovers, and shirts. They also have an impressive selection of window decals. Around the front there are patches and pins as well as body mod jewelry.
After taking it all in, I asked for help. The person at the desk was very friendly. When I asked him for what I was looking for, Pete Yorn - music for the morning after, he did a little research for me. If something is unavailable in store and able to be ordered, need do it for you. That's a very welcome gesture. Unfortunately for me, the record I was looking for want available. Not their fault though. He helped as much as he could, and I appreciated it. If you are a fan of physical music and music in general, especially stuff that gets ignored by hot topic, stop in. Great place. They had Bjork's entire catalogue....
